In a Wright biplane Brookins yesterday flew the 1 2 mile route from Chicago to Springfield. A photo shows Brookins after the record flight with spectators and route details. Women are reported dragged from windows during the event.
A basement blaze at the four story Oxford Terrace apartment house off Huntington Avenue Back Bay sent forty occupants fleeing. Many women and children were carried out as smoke and flames trapped residents who were asleep when the fire broke out shortly after 4 o'clock.

At high noon Special Agent Frederick P. Schmid of the Department of Justice entered the firm’s board room at 62 Devonshire Street and announced the manager’s arrest, leaving the employer dazed by the sudden action and complete raid.

Mrs Rebecca Harding Davis mother of novelist Richard Harding Davis died at Mt Kisco New York after a period of ill health. The authoress of note aged 80 was born in Washington Pennsylvania and rose to prominence with Life in the Iron Halls.
Aviator Walter Brookins broke Charles Hamilton's 86 mile cross country record with a 192.5 mile flight from Chicago to Springfield Illinois in 7 hours 43 minutes winning a $10 000 prize from the Chicago Record Herald He landed at the state fair grounds in Springfield at 4 27 pm after two stops one at Gilman for water oil and gas and another at Mt Pulaski for supplies and a pump failure forced engine heat He started in Chicago and completed the journey with stops at Gilman and Mt Pulaski
Brookins completed the long air race from Chicago to the Illinois State fairgrounds at Springfield in 5 hours 44 minutes for a 212 1/2 mile leg, averaging 33 miles an hour. He started at 9 15 a m and reached the grounds at 4 22 p m after leaving behind a fast Illinois Central special train. Crowds gathered in both Gilman and Mt. Pulaski as he landed, and a wheel strike near Mt. Pulaski briefly worried spectators. He later joked about waiting for lunch companions on the train and called the flight more time consuming than a practice flight.
News from Portland Maine confirms world renowned artist Winslow Homer died at his Scarboro residence at noon yesterday. Born February 24 1836 in Boston he lived much of his later years at Prout's Neck and pursued lithography and painting gaining European and American recognition. His career included War subjects in 1868 popular works like Snap the Whip and international exhibitions in Paris and Philadelphia.

Chauncey M. Gilbert the Boston clubman eloped to Wilmington with Miss Frances Margaret Young on August 23 and were married. The marriage was not acknowledged by Mrs. Gilbert until today after Wilmington records were produced.
