The Harvard football warriors opened the season on the Stadium gridiron and defeated Bates College 29 to 0. Four touchdowns and two field goals marked Harvard’s strong debut as the plucky Bates eleven fought hard.
In New York a running revolver duel occurred between two cars in a fashionable upper West Side district. About fifteen shots were fired and a bloodstain suggested a wounded occupant. Police pursued but both autos escaped. A bystander offered a possible clue with a number for one car.

Correspondents from Reuters and major New York papers were wounded while fleeing to first aid stations.
In Buffalo the United Irish League of America elected Michael J. Ryan of Philadelphia as national president despite his pledge to retire. The convention also named vice presidents, a national secretary and treasurer, and heard a pledge of $151,920 to back the Irish home rule effort.
A league adopted a resolution pledging its faith in John Redmond and its moral and financial support for the home rule campaign, reinforcing leadership backing and ongoing aid.
At Saratoga on September 28 the Republican State convention nominated Henry L. Stimson of New York for Governor. Roosevelt and Root led the campaign, with Stimson receiving 664 votes, Bennet 242, Dunn 58, McEwan 28 and 23 scattering. The ticket also listed Schoeneck Koenig, Thompson, Fennell, Williams, O Malley and Vann with renominations noted.
