Delays in Coal Carrier Berth Space Hurt Charters at New Haven
Delays securing discharging berths for England bound coal carriers in port cause financial losses to charters. Shipments from the other side have largely ceased, with congestion from recent arrivals not worsening. Some steamers rerouted to Providerste to ease the strain while unloading continues at several docks despite non coal built ships slowing the process. The French Maru waited 144 days in stream, piling four days of demurrage. The latch steamer Hagne, after quarantine, berthed at Pier 4 and unloads coal into cars off Atlantic Avenue as onlookers watch trains take full cars away. Women in Inverness played football in the 19th century, wives versus spinsters while men observed.
