A druggist at Meeting House Hill was killed by an armed robber who then robbed the safe and fled. A stage or wagon driver reported a high speed escape weapon claim as the suspect fled the scene.
The American Race Committee after a five hour meeting ended at dawn recommended suspending the international fishermen's race for the year and substituting a free-for-all race between the fastest vessels of the Canadian and American fleets. The move follows the Halifax trustees' ruling that the Boston schooner Mayflower was not a bona fide fisherman but a yacht, straining Canada US relations.
In Syracuse on September 29 Alfred E. Smith was unanimously nominated as the Democratic candidate for Governor ending a fierce intra party battle. George R. Lunn of Schenectady was chosen as Smith’s running mate for lieutenant governor. Hearst declined to pursue the nomination via telegraph to party leaders.
Paul Downey, former Federal Trust Company clerk now jailed, faces larceny charges totaling 127,700. The Suffolk County Grand Jury is expected to hear the Downey case next week along with a probe into an alleged crooked gambling syndicate in the city and surrounding areas. Officials guard secrecy while gamblers grow uneasy as preparations for the investigation proceed.
James A. Stillman failed to obtain an absolute divorce from Anne A. Stillman. Baby Guy Stillman was declared legitimate, entitling him to shares of the Stillman wealth. The referee found Mrs. Stillman not guilty of alleged misconduct and noted doubts about supporting testimony.
U. S. Navy orders twelve destroyers at Norfolk to proceed to Constantinople, with sailing planned for Monday or as soon after as possible. In London the British demand Mustapha Kemal withdraw forces from the Dardanelles neutral zone and back it with full support to General Harrington.
Five men were killed and about twenty injured in a Lake Creek mine explosion near Johnston City Illinois on Friday night. Several of the wounded are reported seriously hurt in the incident that occurred at the Lake Creek mine.
Dr F Fremont Smith a prominent Boston and Washington physician died at his Bar Harbor summer home after a sleepless period. He slashed his throat in the bathtub around 3 pm leaving a farewell note to his wife. He had priorly attempted suicide by shooting five years earlier and is survived by his wife two sons and a daughter.
The British cabinet acted today after receiving despatches from the Near East reporting Kemalist troops advancing to the line where they met British barbed wire defences in several points and at other locations.

Dr Erwin C Ruth of Boston former director of the narcotic bureau for New England was arrested in Portland in United States district court on charges of extorting 160 from Dr Leland H Miller a Fairfield dentist.
A narcotic inspector Ralph A. Fry and Dr Ruth were arraigned in a city court and pleaded not guilty. John He Lacey posted 1000 bail and the pair were freed to a U S District Court hearing on Wednesday. District Attorney Dyer said further charges could involve prominent Maine figures and large sums.
Frank E. Smail a Dorchester druggist was shot dead in the A. H. Copley drug store at 316 Bowdoin Street Meeting House Hill just before 5 yesterday afternoon by a bandit who gave his name as John W. Williams of Allentown Pa. A policeman restrained the armed suspect who sprang at him. Continued on Page 10 Second Col.
Boston milk consumers will pay 141 2 cents a quart as the New England Milk Producers' Association accepted a one cent per quart advance. Dealers add six cents for bottling and distribution costs, with feed costs cited as the reason. On Oct 1 the price will be 81 2 cents.
