Wall Street Ends Weak After Broad Liquidation

Heavy selling dominated New York trading with nearly a million shares changing hands and a weak close. Banks called loans, bears pressed, and major favorites like Amalgamated and Missouri Pacific led losses while copper shares sagged in Boston on metal weakness. The market outlook remains uncertain with some hope for a rally before another downturn, amid tight money and institutional pressure.

Faust at Tremont Theatre Impresses Boston Audience

Faust at the Tremont drew a large enthusiastic crowd with Henry W. Savage's English grand opera company presenting Gounod's work. Gertrude Bennyson made her Boston debut as Marguerite with a pure soprano voice and fine upper register. Francis J. Boyle sang Mephistopheles with good taste though tempo in the Golden Calf seemed too rapid. Valatine and Wagner roles pleased, Faust and Siebel voices varied, chorus shining especially in the soldiers’ chorus. Performances will be repeated this and Friday and Saturday matinees. Tre atore scheduled for today and the week.
