In Quincy on Sept 24 Charles Carlson, indicted for dynamiting Charles K Ellis’s house, was found dead hanging from a tree limb in woods near his home. He had left home early and disappeared. searchers later located the body, noting the rope length caused a strangling drop.
The National League held a three hour meeting at league headquarters in New York. Officials said no public action was taken though most magnates favored war to the bitter end. John T Brush presided and peace overtures were ruled out. Possibility of expanding to 12 clubs with Baltimore and Washington added in the East was discussed.
In Medford the hot campaign for the Republican nomination in the ninth Middlesex district ended with City Physician James C D Clark winning by 227 votes over Park Commissioner Edward S Crockett. Clark carried wards 2 4 and 5 while losing ward 1 by four votes. Clark faces George E Davenport in the general election. Wards 3 and 6 elected Lombard Williams delegates for nearby Winchester.
Secretary of War Root spoke to the Illinois League of Republican clubs in Peoria on September 24, focusing on the Philippines and Cuba. He did not mention tariff or trusts during the address, and offered no comment on those topics.
