Abner J Phipps Educator Dies in Jamaica Plain at 70

Abner J Phipps a renowned New England educator died of consumption in Jamaica Plain on Monday aged 70. Born in Portsmouth New Hampshire he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1888 with a PhD. He taught Latin and Greek at Phillips Andover Academy and served as superintendent in New Bedford Lowell Lewiston Dedham before retiring about 18 months ago.

Retired Boston officer Lieutenant Alfred H. Porter dies

Alfred H Porter a former Boston police lieutenant born in Charlestown in 1815 died recently in Westfield He served from 1855 to 1884 with multiple station transfers including Station 2 4 and 1 He retired in 1884 and later did special duty at the Boston Theatre He leaves a widow and several grown children.

Cape Cod life-saving stations to undergo extensive rebuilds

Provincetown reports extensive alterations to life-saving stations along the Cape Cod coast. Buildings will be enlarged with extra boat rooms, keepers’ rooms, storerooms, verandas and closets. Floors will be renewed, mess rooms and crews’ quarters lathed and plastered, roof observatories added, shingles renewed, foundations strengthened, and each station will gain a large iron cistern.

New York dispatch reports Cinderella was ruled out as she had no club number on board. Clara finished and wins the cup, with no change to the ordering of cups. Citizens' committee will meet soon to decide each cup's value after receiving the final official document from the regatta committee.

American sculptor Hotchkiss dies in Sicily in 1870
