Carpentras a historic town in southern France with papal ties

Carpentras lies sixteen miles northeast of the Rhone and Avignon in a fertile valley near Mt. Ventoux. It sits inside fortifications with four gates and a broad esplanade outside. The town hosts a gothic cathedral, a museum, a public library with 25 000 volumes, and an aqueduct finished in 1734. Population about 11 000. Pope Clement V made it the papal residence in 1313 and Innocent VI rebuilt the present walls in 1363.
