Charles F. Donnelly, a leading Suffolk bar member from Roxbury, secretly married Amy F. Collins in Providence. The ceremony was private, attended by only immediate family and two clergy. They departed for a three week wedding tour and will reside with Donnelly's mother in Roxbury.
Ferdinand A. Wyman of Boston offices urges holders of about 300000 in mortgages to record assignments immediately and have taxes investigated. He notes 200000 in tax certificates ahead of mortgages and offers to manage recording, tax security, and property valuation for banks in New England and firms in the shoe and leather trades with offices in Kansas City and Omaha.
Five men killed and five injured in a Plymouth Lehigh and Wilkesbarre Coal Co mine explosion caused by a naked lamp in a gas pocket. Victims include David M. Jones and Joshua Golightly. Rescue efforts followed as flames and debris swept the gangway. rescue and recovery continued as plans to resume work were made.
William Gast age fifteen son of Albert Gast of 20 Burnett Street West Roxbury was arrested by Division 4 police on charges of stealing about 500 dollars worth of millinery goods from Mrs. W B Crocker at 494 Washington Street. Police found 500 dollars worth of goods hidden in his West Roxbury home and he admitted the theft. His sister, younger by a year or two, is suspected but not arrested.
William J. Murphy, nine year old son, and Porter's affair drive the family to ruin. Murphy, 36, a Sixth Avenue oyster house worker, pursues his missing wife Mary through New York with a detective after she elopes with Frank Porter. He describes a stable marriage, weekly support, and Porter’s influence while vowing to reunite with his son Sinnott.
In Brockton a Free Will Baptist pastor, Delbert G. Donnocker, aged about 35, was arrested on a felonious assault charge filed by Ella Gilman of Scarboro Maine. He had resigned as Scarboro church leader and later taught at the Brockton high school while living with his wife and children also in Lewiston. The case involves a May 13 allegation of paternity and assault. Sheriff Cram arranged extradition and Donnocker surrendered willingly after discussion.
Returns last night point to ex-Congressman Frederick T. Greenhalge as the likely Republican nominee for governor with a wide lead in delegates. Worcester delivered a solid delegation of sixty eight while Boston suburbs and Cambridge produced strong shifts. Pillsbury and Hart trails noted, but Greenhalge gains dominate as final caucuses approach.
The railroad commissioners will on Thursday September 28 at 10 a m hear the Post Publishing Company petition for equal terms and facilities in distributing Sunday papers on the Boston and Maine and New York New Haven and Hartford railroads. The Cambridge Republican caucuses last night produced unpledged state delegates with Greenhalge leading at 22 to Hart 16 and Pillsbury 2. Durant won three wards for senator, Henderson carried Ward 4, with Ward 5 caucus stirring criticism of its conduct. Mayor Bancroft was elected a Ward 1 state delegate and is unpledged.
Democratic delegates named for state and county per Ashland Chelmsford Dracut and Chelsea districts on Sept 21. Chelsea ward caucuses listed delegates for all conventions with tallies for ward 1 and large slate. Chelsea also names city committee and various ward officers.
In Melrose on September 21 the Honorable William E Barrett spoke at a Republican caucus and publicly stated he will not run for office. He favored Greenhalge for governor, said he would likely be nominated and elected, and claimed to be the strongest man in the party.
Patrolman C W Gray of Division 8 aided Railroad Officer C C Nason at the Eastern depot where John Callahan, arrested for drunkenness, resisted and kicked Gray in the bowels. Gray sustained severe injuries, was treated by Dr Cilley and sent home after initial care.
Forecast for Friday calls for fair and warmer weather in New England and Eastern New York with a stationary temperature at Block Island. Winds will shift to the south as conditions continue into the evening.
Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr. went out on horseback in Newport calling on friends to deny sensational reports he was badly hurt after being thrown from a horse during a private drag hunt hosted by his father. His shoulder was slightly hurt.
A Boston investigation into appraiser L A Dodge is submitted to Secretary Carlisle in Washington. The confidential charges detail political influence, political work while on duty, favoritism to Stoddard Lovering & Co., and alleged whiskey theft, with a request for further departmental action.
