Robert Smith, a Black man, assaulted Mrs. Henry Bishop in Botetourt County, looted money, and battered her with a brick. He was jailed in Roanoke as a mob gathered to lynch him, prompting militia fire that killed several and wounded many, including Mayor Trout.
Natick two high school students Robert Corrigan and George Colburn, both 16, ran away after planning to seek wealth. They left a letter claiming they would work, save, and bank funds, while their families hoped for their safe return.
