The Red Sox defeated the Tigers to move two games ahead in the American League standings. Detroit drops to third as Chicago soon overtakes for position. Boston has 12 games left, Detroit eight, while Chicago has nine remaining.

James H. Gerhardt, 70, was found starved and sick by Weymouth police in a Philips street dugout where he had lived two years. He reported two days without food or drink and wore tatters with burlap as his only cover. He was taken to the station for care and his daughter Mrs. John Gale of South Boston was notified.

Raymond Belmont son of August Belmont and Miss Carolyn B. Hurlbert wed in Middleburg Virginia when Justice Cohalan in New York signed the final decree of divorce on the same day. Belmont, Harvard graduate and sportsman, and Hurlbert were prominent social figures in Cincinnati society.
In Los Angeles Harry Howland a newspaper reporter wrote and acted out a planned suicide story. He took poison at his desk last night and was found dead. His wife and child died in Kansas City a year earlier. He had planned to shoot himself outside the office but used poison instead.
Mrs. Mary Hood living with relatives on Centre street Newton Centre was shot twice by her husband Arthur about 1 am. One bullet pierced the left arm above the elbow and the other struck the left side below the armpit. The husband escaped.
Hood entered via window and dragged his wife from bed then fired twice. He fled through the front door. The injured woman was taken to Newton Hospital and may recover. Hood had faced non support charges and was called “the meanest man in the world” by a judge. He had prior arrests for abandoning his baby.

Rowley, head of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, heard the shooting after alighting from a car with the couple.
Dr. Rowley heard five rapid shots and saw a man flee after Di Cola fell. Di Cola was rushed to Corey Hill Hospital then Massachusetts General Hospital, where a Bureau of Criminal Investigation detective waited at his bedside but he did not regain consciousness. Edward R. Smith and Mrs. Di Cola heard screams and rushed to aid.
Officials at Portland Maine report a new submarine trader docking at a leased port near Portland believed to replace the Bremen sunk at sea. A high authority confirms preparations at New London were a blind to allow the submersible to slip in unmolested as brokers handle the arrival and deployment of one of several such vessels.
Chicago dispatch notes that early arrests in a blackmailing conspiracy may have disrupted plans to capture higher ranking gang members in Eastern cities. The report intimates Senator Lewis may seek removal of Investigator Clabaugh over perceived government setbacks.
In the New York Republican primary William M. Calder led Robert Bacon by about 7000 votes as returns came in from most districts. Officials anticipated the final result would not differ materially, with about 3850 districts still incomplete, many in sparsely populated rural counties.
