KNOWLES A MAN OF ADVENTURES

Howard Noble recalls Joe Knowles a Boston artist whose Maine wilderness experiment drew wide attention. Knowles sailed in the navy White Squadron, deserted a yacht at Hampton Roads, survived an oyster boat accident, lived with Sioux on a government reserve, learned crafts, and became a renowned outdoor painter who shuns hunting and cruelty to wildlife. He remains physically formidable after years of minimal work.
