Northampton Sept 16 President L Clark Seelye of Smith College says graduates become good wives mothers teachers and businesswomen, denying that higher education makes them averse to marriage. He argues the college produces well rounded women who balance family and career.

Charles Smith of Smithville, jailed at the Western Penitentiary, allegedly bribed guards with two pies weekly for 250 dollars, seven pints of whiskey, and up to 1000 dollars weekly for evening walks. Guards demanded 5000 dollars to avoid reporting him, while Warden Francis vows prosecution. Smith’s relatives warned him to resist blackmail.

Judge King of the Superior Court in East Cambridge said he would pronounce sentence next Monday at 4 p m after hearing evidence in the case of Frank M Gould son of a Newton physician. Gould was arrested by Brookline police last July found in a wealthy house basement while under probation for a prior offense and was surrendered by probation officers last week.
Rochester Minnesota September 16 Governor Johnson, operated on yesterday, spent a fairly easy day as doctors monitor his condition. Physicians expect a crisis before dawn, while the governor joked with Dr McNiven about the operation, saying we had a close shave last night.
