The 13 event all round match between John G. Maxwell of South Boston and Herbert W. West of Revere at Boston Union Grounds decided Maxwell winner after seven events. West led early but Maxwell won with strong showings in weights, hammer, shot, high jump, broad jump, hop and run. Municipal Court Notes Show Fines in Week’s Session

In municipal court Oscar Morton was fined 100 dollars and costs for keeping and exposing intoxicating liquors without a license. Michael Doherty faced trial after being held in 50 dollars for unlawfully selling liquors on Sunday. Edith Fitzgerald and others were fined for unlawful Sunday liquor sales. Several defendants including Carrie Connor Nellie Abbott Blanche Howard William Mahoney and Nellie Johnson were fined 100 dollars each for keeping of ill fame. James Stokes alias Miller was held in 200 dollars for trial Sept 19 for larceny of two overcoats. King Burrill and Maj Jones were held in 1200 dollars each for appearance Sept 15 for breaking and entering Benj Bryant’s store with 725 dollars in bills and 825 in silver. Cane and Baxter were each held in 1200 dollars for the superior court. In Roxbury John McShay was held in 500 dollars for Sept 17 for indecent exposure.

Surge in Women Voters as Last Day Arrives

An appeal to Boston women to qualify as school committee voters prompts a rush at city hall. Over 200 submitted applications Monday, with the yearly total now surpassing 1,000 names and about 60 percent identified as Catholic. At a Monday meeting the Ancient and Honorable Artillery company planned a trip to New Haven for the October fall field day. A committee was formed to arrange Albany Burgess hospitality during the visit. Maj. Charles W. New Orleans Fire Chief Seeks New England Firemen Tournament

Thomas O Connor chief engineer of the New Orleans fire department for 17 years travels from Boston to Manchester to drum up New England interest in the New Orleans exposition next March. The event features a three day firemen tournament showcasing America s current apparatus with volunteers from across the union expected to attend. Secretary Hills of the National Association of Fire Engineers is in Boston visiting friends.

Annual Gathering of Eighth Massachusetts Battery Association

The Eighth Massachusetts Battery Association held its annual reunion at the Quincy House on Monday evening with a large turnout. Ex President H. W. Woodbury led the session at 7:45, reports were approved, and letters from several members were read. Ephraim Thayer’s death was noted in a letter from H. S. Archer. Officers for the coming year were elected: President Lieut. C. C. Coffin, Vice President James C. Bartley, Treasurer Dennis McAvoy, Secretary James S. Dearborn. A vote of thanks to retiring officers passed, and a copy of the reunion report was to be sent to absent comrades. An adjournment followed to the dining hall for supper, after which roll call and speeches occurred and a committee on the next reunion was appointed.

Man Hurt After Fall From Second Story Window

Charles A Stanley, who rooms with Mrs Davis at 14 Boylston Place, went to his second floor room in a hazy condition Monday night. He was jolted awake after being struck by someone or something on the street below and suffered a serious back injury and head bruises. He was taken to City Hospital.

Joyce Case at Salem Court Fails License Defense

The case of John Joyce of Salem came before the district court Monday. Joyce kept the back door of his saloon open and was arrested for keeping liquor with intent to sell. He argued he had a license. Judge Osgood ruled the license forfeited for keeping the back door open and not permanently closing it. Joyce was fined $100 and appealed.

Mauritius notes a bark Slangevecht from Galle to New York condemned after leaking and chartered for 860 pounds to carry cargo to New York Bermuda. Sept 10 whaling bark Tropic Bird reported in distress abandoned and to be sold. Barks Seconds Fancuilli Oneta and John Black Stevens, previously reported, are discharging cargoes for repairs.
