Railroads settle southern rate war and plan pooling
It is said that an adjustment of differences between the Richmond and Danville and East Tennessee roads has been made by which both roads agree to restore passenger rates immediately. A meeting is to be held Tuesday to try to pool the passenger business of the Southwestern association as freight is pooled. A Chicago report says that the St. Paul directors may, at the coming meeting, after declaring a 24 percent dividend on the common stock, declare a supplemental dividend of 1 percent payable later, in order to make 5 percent declared for the year 1885, not the fiscal year. Calumet and Hecla sold readily at 215, Franklin at 84 and Osceola at 123. The Engineering and Mining Journal says lake copper is not obtainable for 11 cents, except on large contracts, and there is considerable inquiry for it. The exports of copper for seven months of 1885 were 25,502,586 pounds in ingots, bars, etc., and 27,010 pounds in sheets, the total value of all exports being $5,124,900. The July exports were worth $667,724, the lightest for any month this year except February, when the valuation was $445,148. The Copper Falls mine returned 67 tons 975 pounds of mineral in August, and the Allouez Tribute company took out 133 tons 740 pounds. In August, 1884, Copper Falls yielded 58 tons 1,435 pounds, and Allouez 102 tons 150 pounds.

California Southern Opens San Diego Link to Atchison System
The California Southern railway nears completion forming a through line from the Missouri river to the Pacific via Daggett and Colton. It promises San Diego’s growth with a population around 3000, a superb harbor, healthy climate, and vast fruit lands, while Carson and Colorado extends toward Mojave linking Nevada mining and timber regions. The piece lauds the Atchison system’s growth, minimal debt approach, and notes Georgia rail rate debates and Wisconsin Central expansion rumors alongside eastbound freight shifts and Vanderbilt line influence.
