Money market and stocks drift lower in New York trading

On September 12 in New York money rates eased to 1 11 percent on call with close at 1 4 percent. Prime mercantile paper quoted 54 64 percent. Bar silver at 1104. Exchange steady around 482 long and 4843 485 short. Government bonds firm. state bonds quiet. railroad bonds weak amid rumors of a troubled English committee report on Erie securities. Major stocks slipped with Northwestern 2 to 9 734, St Paul to 84 15, Lackawanna to 108 %, Lake Shore 79 14, New York Central 100 %, Union Pacific 49 %, Western Union 66. Prices moderated later. total shares traded 131,400 with mixed commodity notes and dairy prices following old patterns.

Liabilities some time ago were about 250 000, leaving a nominal surplus of 50 000 to 100 000. It is widely believed assets will not cover liabilities. Endorsements remain on some bank-held paper. Several local businesses report assets and liabilities, with various settlements and failures noted. A meeting of bank and telegraph company committees was held to discuss continuing operations amid hopes of resolution. Superior Court Roundup Selections Sept 12

In Superior Criminal Court Judge Gardner presided. Dexter N Wallace was found not guilty of indecent exposure. The jury disagreed in the case of Mary McKenna charged with indecent exposure. William Cummings Joseph Sullivan and Joseph Dowling were found not guilty by reason of a variance in the indictment. Caroline Hanington pleaded guilty to larceny from the person and was sent to the reformatory prison for women for 18 months. Silas B Chamberlain was found guilty of larceny from the person and sentenced to the state prison for three years.
