What They Base Their Hope On
Friends of Congressman Crisp of Georgia expect him to win the Speakership in December. They claim strong support from Atlantic Coast Democrats, Alabama, Mississippi, most Louisiana, and New York minus a few votes, plus expected blocs from New Jersey and New England. Mills has some Western, Arkansas, Texas strength but limited New York support. Georgia delegation near-unanimous for Crisp. Farmers Alliance members ready to back caucus results to avoid Reedism. If needed, Crisp backers anticipate a first ballot win or a clear majority on the second ballot.

Old South School reunion at Dingley's Corner
Marshfield on Sept 10 held the first reunion of the Old South School Association at Dingley's Corner near the old school site. A historical address by Mrs. Sarah L. Bosworth and reminiscences by former pupils and teachers followed a social forenoon and a covered collation. An inscription noted the school’s history from 1800 to 1856 and the building’s later remodelling. A future annual gathering is planned. In Salem, Sept 10, a skeleton of an Indian was uncovered during trenching on Turner Street and will join the Institute collection.
