Losses totaled 160000 with key firms among insured victims including Darling estate Utica clothier Schellenberg Baum and Greene. The fire origin remains a mystery. Beverly fire adds to a string of incendiary attacks. Vestry street barn blaze causes 25000 loss and a fugitive sighting. Johnston barn fire costs 2500 with contents saved. Arlington house fire adds 3000 loss, insured.
In Haverhill on September 9 S M Morse and Co jewellery at 170 Merrimac Street was robbed in broad daylight. The thief entered while the proprietor was in the basement and stole eleven watches and twenty gold rings valued at an estimated sum.
Washington reports two top officials resigning their posts for health and academic reasons. Judge Thomas M. Cooley steps down as chairman of the Interstate Commerce Commission after overwork. John K. Moore resigns as Third Assistant Secretary of State to take a Columbia College professorship in international law.
Secretary Blaine prepares for a reception on October 1 and may not return until late October as New England leaves turn brown. Assistant Secretary Wharton notes an uncertain return date and describes Blaine’s absence as officials discuss reciprocity talks led by John W. Foster. Washington irritation grows over direct Presidential consultations with Secretary Tracy bypassing assistants.
About a hundred New England merchants and their wives tour major East Coast cities. Led by Benjamin Johnson, they will present a food and health exhibit at the Agricultural Department opening Oct. 5, modeled after London Heatheries crowds.

The Mule Spinners' Association held a large meeting at Fal River to protest wage cuts. Seven delegates were chosen for the national convention in Lawrence. Members urged against wage reductions, citing increased margins and limited inventories. They favored a strike, targeting fine goods mills first, with another meeting planned to finalize figures.
Police arrested a man named G. Levick in a case tied to an assault on a woman near the fairground. Grips contained suspect bonds, a letter about a dead dog for a defunct cat scheme, and references to Farmers' Loan & Trust Co. The bonds were deemed genuine by some officials but the corporations are unverified. Levick claims they are worthless and says he sells them. A revolver, a loaded pistol, religious books, and other items were found. Levick says he studied law and medicine and once belonged to the Philadelphia fire department. Important developments are expected.
News from Oyster Bay on September 9 reports rapid progress on the railroad extension and new piers for the Boston line. The first trip over the route is hoped for Saturday, with the large dock nearly finished and mud clearing to deepen water for steamers Cape Charles and Express to carry cars across the sound. Alfred Jones is named yardmaster at Oyster Bay.
Salem September 9. Those familiar with the Searles will case expect a compromise before the hearing set for two weeks hence. They say the South Pacific stock remains tied by this will and that parties will pay to avoid breaking up the large holding. Timothy Hopkins appears to have the strongest case for judicial scrutiny.
Bishop Leonard of the Episcopal Church in Cleveland today announced the modification of the sentence against Rev. Howard Mac Queary of Canton. Originally suspended for six months and to be deposed if he refused to recant, the punishment is now a perpetual suspension pending further action.
The Camelia, a bark owned by L and G Teatier of St Johns Newfoundland, is reported wrecked off Scattaria C B with the loss of all hands. Built in Kugwad in 1873, the vessel’s fate is now under inquiry.

The event features Horace Blaine Harrison cheers, speeches by Varnum and Payne, and a fiery platform backing reciprocity, protection, currency parity, and strong state reform. Becker support and Laughlin antics punctuate the session as Fassett moves toward unanimous nomination.

Various wards reported split ballots and disputes over official ballots, with unpledged delegates common across wards and many results pending for state and council posts.
