Cambridge Lad and Youth Drowned in Nickabong Pond

A sail boat capsized on Nickabong pond near West Brookfield Massachusetts yesterday afternoon. Dwight G Knowlton age 18 son of Charles G Knowlton agent of Lewis Bros condensed milk factory here and Albert Watson age about 18 visiting Knowlton were drowned. Bodies recovered.

Smallpox Found In Pittsfield Boy Of Assembly Leader

In Pittsfield Massachusetts on September 10 a 14 year old boy Seymour Patterson son of the New York assembly Speaker Patterson was found to have smallpox. He had recently arrived from Lake George with his mother and relatives. After blotches appeared his schoolmates were removed from public schools and the family with a nurse will be moved to an isolated house. A vaccination proclamation will be issued by the board of health.

National Telephone Exchange association closes session in Providence

The Providence Narragansett hotel hosted the final session of the National Telephone Exchange association. President Fay chaired as J J Carty of Boston presented the Multiple System paper amid lively discussion. A sketch of yearly patent-right litigation by Mr Lockwood followed. At 12:40 the convention adjourned sine die and at 1:00 delegates sailed the Philadelphia for a harbor trip.

Syracuse Man Assaults Woman Then Abandons Victim

Henry Edson of Central Square Oswego county took Sarah Johnson riding, assaulted her at a blocked road, dragged her into a swamp, held her for hours, and deserted her. She escaped, collapsed from exhaustion, and was found near a farmhouse. Edson was arrested at Mansville amid public outcry.

East Haven Connecticut September 10 The B S Wheeler and Co wire mill reopened with 25 workers brought from Worcester amid striker protests. The plant normally employs 125 men and no trouble is expected as production resumes after a strike that had kept the mill closed.

The second annual St Louis exposition opened last evening drawing over 20,000 visitors within an hour. The entire display is described as wonderfully fine with many exhibits in perfect order ready for close inspection. The fair runs through October 2 with Gilmore's New York band providing music.

Seven hundred Chinese miners in Rock Springs, Wyoming, return under escort of four troops. Local fear rises that miners will attack company buildings now under heavy guard, with serious trouble anticipated once they believe they have opportunity to strike.

Tramps Run Gauntlet Then Plunge Into River In Muncie

In Muncie Indiana yesterday six tramps were released from jail and forced to run the gauntlet. About two hundred men and boys armed with whips and clubs lined the route and compelled the men to dive into a river that was shallow. All escaped unharmed and fled toward the railroad.

Smallpox cases and deaths rise in Montreal

Montreal health department reports 34 new smallpox cases yesterday with 17 authenticated. Fifteen deaths occurred in the city as the outbreak continues to affect the population.

In Worcester Massachusetts on September 10 a morning auction of musical festival seats raised premiums totaling 1749 and gross receipts 6014, the largest sums ever earned for seat selections.

The Society of the Army of the Tennessee held an adjourned forenoon meeting in Chicago with Gen Sherman presiding. A Rock Island 1886 gathering was set. Gen Chetlain chosen as orator. Prohibition party convention meets in Mechanics Hall

The state convention of the prohibition party met today in Mechanics Hall Worcester. Rev J W Hamilton of Somerville was chosen president with a large list of notable party figures as vice presidents. Mr Noble of England spoke on America guiding liquor policy as the world turns to prohibition. The Sinews of War fund aims for 35000 with subscriptions to 100 each. five contributors pushed the stock to 25 per share and 650 pledged. Ex Gov St John attended, urging unity and predicting a 1892 prohibition victory akin to 1860 slavery triumphs.
