William Murray, jailed on burglary and jewelry heist charges, was given poison last night in an apparent bid to kill him and silence a broker linked to the case. Doctors say Murray is in precarious condition but may survive as investigators probe the poisoning and motive.
The Western Union telegraph board declares a 14.4 percent dividend on capital stock payable October 15. The quarterly statement shows June 30 1885 surplus at 4,324,004 11, with net revenue for the quarter of 1,380,671 96 and interest on bonded debt sinking funds of 1,343,610 91 after adjustments from the 1900 bonds sinking fund return.
San Francisco report says Joseph N Krelling Tivoli owner convicted of contempt of court for producing Nanon despite an injunction by Judge Radon. He was fined 500 dollars and jailed five days. His brothers John and William Krelling, part owners, each fined 250 dollars and jailed two days.
Pittsfield Mass Sept 9 A C Hovey of Wall Street employed a newly arrived German named Fred Poppe at his Ocean Beach N J cottage. Last Sunday Poppe robbed the cottage of 2000 in diamonds and jewelry and 200 in cash. He was arrested here last night and confessed today surrendering the property except about 100 of the money spent. A letter found suggests he fled Germany to escape robberies there.

At Holmesburg Junction on the Pennsylvania railroad a morning collision derailed twenty one cars after a broken frog threw an engine from the track. Barre post office burglars drill safe, steal 800 stamps and 15 dollars, flee with horse and buggy.
A Springfield despatch reports a terrible cyclone striking Washington Court House Ohio a city of 4000 inhabitants at 8 last evening. The tornado destroyed 40 to 50 business blocks and most private homes 200 residences leveled Churches depots and many buildings were blown away. Five known dead and about 50 injured with extensive debris, gaslights out, and a relief effort under way as trains deliver aid and authorities organize search in the chaos.
Reports from Ohio and Indiana describe yesterday's storm path from Washington Court House eastward across Miami County. Barns and homes were blown down in Colesville and surrounding areas, with multiple injuries and extensive property damage noted from Cambridge City to Dublin and beyond. No lives were reported lost despite severe destruction along the Ohio river corridor.

New York dispatch reports Michael Galligan a drill machine helper at shafts7 on the Yonkers aqueduct was killed by a blast at 5 20 this morning. The 600 foot heading is lit by electricity and blasts are fired electrically. After signalling the crew to clear the area the explosion occurred. Galligan’s body was found under rock 20 feet from the blast site. No one recalls seeing him. It is believed he slept through the warning after a long night shift.

School committeemen chosen as Washerman Warren Randolph Anthony Sherman and Henry H Fay. Sewers proposal failed 144000. Asylum site for Coasters Harbor Island approved, engine house in third ward approved.
Fall River dispatch reports the Rhode Island and Massachusetts Christian conference semi annual session held in Swansea. Rev. Albert G. Morton, Salisbury, the oldest preacher, delivered the annual sermon. Rev. T B Weeks, New Bedford, gave today’s sermon. Officers elected include President J H Coe and secretary B S Batcheur. next session planned for Rockland.
In Malden on Sept 9 Bertie Goulit and youths found a man’s body in bushes near William I Stinson’s residence. Henry O Allen of 22 Washington Street was identified. a bottle with prussic acid lay beside him. A former United States navy yeoman, wealthy in recent years, had been drinking heavily. He leaves a wife and two sons. Medical Examiner Sullivan viewed the body before it was moved to his father-in-law J C Richardson’s Pleasant Street residence.
New York reports eleven typhoid cases at sanitary headquarters today. Last week had five new cases, with two deaths and two new cases on Sunday and Monday. For the week ending Sept 5 there were 37 cases and 10 deaths, with cases expected to rise until cold weather reduces spread.
John Curtis, 55, of Mt Carmel, drowned after stopping at Lake Whitney on his way home from New Haven. A seven mile Savin Rock swimming match faded as contestants quit early. Thomas Moore of Southington and William Keegan from New Haven gave up after short distances, while Fred Steinmuller retired exhausted after nearly five miles. Paine's Furniture Co. advertises new book cases at 48 Canal.

Martin Ewing a colored man born about 1765 in Virginia is said to be 120 years old living with his son near Dalton Missouri. He recalls colonial era events, has smoked and chewed tobacco for 110 years and has had six wives. He remembers Col James Ewing, camp meetings and Lorenzo Dow, and claims longevity challenges.
The state board of health lunacy and charity opposes relocation from the state house. Chairman Donnelly shows No. 13 Beacon street rooms lack private officer spaces and proper light and air, while noting the rooms are larger than current. Legal objections claim a resolve cannot repeal an act and that accommodations outside were prescribed. In the United States commissioner's court on Wednesday George P Bettison a letter carrier was held in 1500 for the present September term of the district court on a charge of embezzling letters. He allegedly retained letters belonging to another carrier accidentally mixed in his box at the main office. An arrest was made using a decoy letter found on his person. Post office officials believe they can now account for a large number of missing letters.

Wilson for cruel treatment while the crew counters with mutiny claims. Deputy Marshal Gallupe oversees arrests as Commissioner Hallett prepares to hear the charges today.

In SEATTLE WY September 9 a mob of Indians aided by white men attacked a party of Chinese hop pickers 189 miles east of Seattle. Two Chinese were killed and four wounded after the attackers used clubs and stones. Indians had previously harvested hops. this year one firm hired Chinese workers who refused to depart when warned.

Capt Robson of the schooner Dallas Hill died Monday of smallpox at Gallop's island after arriving from St John N B a week earlier. The captain reportedly visited his ill wife in St John despite authorities forbidding visits, staying with her until late on the day of sailing.
