Main-Travelled Roads and Tales of Two Countries Review
A critical overview of Hamlin Garland’s Main-Travelled Roads and Alexander Kielland’s Tales of Two Countries. Garland’s six Mississippi Valley tales are praised for power and sincerity but noted as dusty and dreary with heavy atmosphere. Kielland’s stories are described as uneven though The Parsonage stands out. Archer’s translation and Boyesen’s introduction receive cautious commendation.
