Boston reports Roskins winning the altitude contest at Squantum over Grahame White and Johnstone. President Taft witnessed dramatic flights as Brookins descended in volplanes, while Grahame White dominated speed and accuracy scoring.
Walter Brookins, Wright brothers aviator, claimed the altitude title with a 3860 foot flight, surpassing Grahame-White who earlier held the record at 3440 feet. White reached 3500 feet, and the field lists Johnstone and Brookins as the only Americans against White in top Harvard Aviation Field marks. White has flown more but not beaten the 1 hour duration record.
The sole existing triplane built by A V Roe was wrecked in a gust while landing at the Atlantic field. Roe, English aviator and pioneer, escaped with the engine reportedly undamaged though the craft broken in pieces. Earlier prop damage occurred when ground gear gave way on landing. Roe has demonstrated flight but cites engine power issues.
Early yesterday four hobbyists prepared for flights at the aviation field. Hilliard in a Burgess Curtiss completed a full air circle on a new 60 horsepower motor while Post, Kearney, and Starling Burgess conducted trials with mixed results.
Alfred B. Scott of New York was dashed violently to the ground from about 35 feet while testing his own aeroplane invention in Geneva Switzerland. He escaped with slight injuries.
Ira J. Webster, prominent Haverhill shoe maker, funds and oversees an airship under construction at the Spaulding factory on River street. Milton Chase, a skilled machinist, leads the project with expert help. Webster pursued air navigation after noting Chase’s patent for a novel military airship concept.
Archduke Leopold Salvator and August Warchalowsky escaped a midair collision near Wiener Neustadt as Carl Warchalowsky fell with his machine, breaking both legs. The Archduke, an avid aeronaut, has a long history with balloon flights, including Paris 1900 and Alpine crossings.
