Portland's Mayor Deering enforced laws, yet 1885 results shifted to a Republican mayor, signaling a robust anti-Prohibition trend and warning of a looming political reckoning.

Affairs of the Indian Orchard Mills Finance Crisis

It is said the quick cash assets of Indian Orchard Mills total about 400,000 in cash notices and bills receivable. The entire stock of plain cottons on hand has been sold, with proceeds included in that sum. A large unsold lot of fabrics remains. It is thought a sale of the company property with the current assets will cover all debts, including losses from the late treasurer, without the stockholders.
