Captain Albert Oliver of the Campana and four of the five navy gun crew members are in a Brandenburg prison camp after their ship was sunk by a German submarine on August 6. Seaman William Albert Miller's fate is not yet confirmed, with an inquiry sent to Geneva for details.
The four American gunners Delaney Roop Levankline and Jacob were taken prisoner with Miller after the Campana tanker surrendered following a four hour battle. A French cruiser rescued eight sailors and 40 crewmen after the U-boat overpowered the crew in small boats. The submarine continued bombardment and then took prisoners before sinking the tanker.

Official tallies report 107 naval ratings killed and 86 wounded, plus civilian deaths and injuries. Damages were described as slight though naval barracks suffered casualties. Chatham dockyard escaped.
Elbridge A. Bollong of Allston and Robert C. Baird of Allston left from Brighton District Court for Camp Devens after a surprise send off. Judge Thomas H. Connelly praised the two as exemplary youths about to enter public service, and encouraged their district with supportive remarks.

In Washington on Sept 4 the Senate rejected three high tax plans from war profits advocates. Hollis amendment to tax at higher rates and strike a $428 million excess profits levy failed 57 to 12. La Follette flat 60 percent rate lost 50 to 18, and Hollis minimum 50 percent plan failed 52 to 18.

Hollis and Kenyon push for a 60 percent flat tax while Smoot defends the current plan. The bill totals about four billion dollars with a projected one third levy on profits.
