Five people, four city of Boston employees, were injured when the vehicle overturned on Bridge street Cambridge while avoiding a heavy truck. Three or four may be fatally hurt, and the party was en route to the Foresters' games at North Cambridge yesterday.
Patrick J. Cunningham driver of the wrecked car is listed on the dangerous list at Massachusetts General Hospital. He lives on Rosemont Street Dorchester and works as a traffic officer at City Hall Avenue station. Myles McFarland of 3 Austin Street Charlestown suffers a concussion and scalp lacerations. A Reuters dispatch from Amsterdam reports that reliable information says President Wilson's reply to Pope Benedict's peace proposal has made a profound impression in political circles in Germany.
Mathias Erzberger, backed by a Reichstag majority, will press for a government responsible to the Reichstag and end to the Alsace Lorraine plea with inhabitant voting on allegiance. He may call for postwar general disarmament and possible dissolution of the Reichstag for new elections. Dr Eduard David argues the Reichstag can veto and force change. new elections with soldiers voting could reveal the state’s direction and predict a crushing defeat for pan Germans.
Judge Sawyer enjoins Ralph Carpenter Sr and Mrs Carpenter and their attorneys from removing the boy from Concord and from discussing the litigation with him. Each parent is forbidden to disparage the other parent or grandparents in speech or letters to the child. Violation may revoke visitation rights.
Judge Sawyer of the New Hampshire Superior Court rules against Marguerite Paul Carpenter of Boston and Major Ralph G. Carpenter in seeking temporary custody of Ralph Jr. for the upcoming school year. The decree denies both parents access to custody during the term.
Judge Sawyer awards temporary custody of Ralph Jr to Professor John Kent of this city. Kent is a former Concord High School principal and has led several boys schools over the years.
President Wilson and Congress members will lead a display on Pennsylvania Avenue to honor the district first draft quota for the new national army. High officials diplomats soldiers and sailors are expected to participate in the capitol to White House march.
Drafted men will march in a large display near the President with sections marked by banners while bands play. The Stars and Stripes will lead the procession as the Senate and House adjourn early to attend.
Russian forces abandon the Riga front in a full retreat as German troops advance. The opening to Petrograd appears left open for Kaiser’s armies, with Russians unwilling to fight a stand.
The Boston and Maine railroad mechanics strike has been presented to the Railroad War Board by road officials through Temporary Receiver James H. Hustis. Hustis warned the situation is grave and the line must see workers return to provide essential service.
Harold A. Whitman 29 a chemist of Melrose was robbed and beaten by highwaymen on Mystic Avenue near Grant Street Somerville early Sunday. He died at Somerville Hospital from a fractured skull after being found unconscious with pockets turned inside out. Whitman is brother of Captain Arthur Whitman who recently received his commission at Plattsburg.
In St. Johnsbury Vermont on September 3 1919 the Caldonia Court examined 40 jurors to form a panel for the murder trial of Mrs Alvin Kenniston in the death of Alice Bradshaw. Polling will continue tomorrow and the trial likely opens Wednesday. Miss Etta May Hicks also indicted will be tried after.
Boston will dispatch the first batch of drafted men to the national army training camp at Ayer tomorrow. Fifty men are selected and will leave throughout the day with transportation arranged by local boards, some by auto, reporting to the camp commander before sunset.
German airplanes struck the southeast coast of England last night with bombs at multiple locations. No casualties or damage were reported by official sources up to midnigh t. The statement notes that enemy airships crossed the coast at 11 o clock and that several British airships pursued the attackers.
German forces quickly moved on Riga after crossing the Dvina River, capturing the big Baltic port and forcing evacuations as Russian defense collapsed. Bridges were thrown across the river and infantry pressed the retreating defenders toward the eastern bank.
Forecast shows fair conditions for Boston and vicinity with moderate temperatures and light to moderate northwest to north winds. The Washington bulletin notes similar fair weather across New England for Tuesday and Wednesday with no precipitation expected.
Yesterday's temperatures recorded by Thompson's Spa show a sequence of times with highs around 68 to 74 and lows in the 50s to 60s. The average yesterday was 69 and the average from last year was 61.

Cleveland defeated St Louis 9 3 in the morning and 6 in the afternoon, with New York and Boston trading 7 0 and 6 2 results. Philadelphia beat Brooklyn 5 0 in the first game and 9 3 in the second, and Pittsburg swept Cincinnati 8 0 in the morning and 5 3 in the afternoon. Chicago won 6 5 over St Louis in the first game, then St Louis won 2 0 in the second.
