French and British forces advanced near Forest and Clery south of Combles. The Germans defended Guillemont and Ginchy. 300 prisoners and many guns were taken. French overran trenches east of Fleury as Verdun fighting continued nearby.
A large air raid targeted British coastal towns as thirteen Zeppelins attacked the island. Reports indicate widespread bombardment and damage to several settlements, marking one of the largest assault waves on the British coastline to date.
London reports a massive air raid as thirteen Zeppelins attacked eastern counties last night. One man and one woman were killed while thirteen people were injured. only three Zeppelins reached near London, one shot down and two repelled by aircraft guns. The field marshal noted casualties were disproportionate to ships used.
President Wilson signed the Adamson eight hour bill in his private car at Union Station as railroad brotherhoods call off a planned nationwide strike. He will sign again on his return to Washington to ensure legality of the measure despite Sunday signing.
The duration of peace hinges on the move to test constitutionality of the act. If railroads delay action awaiting the eight hour day inquiry, the unions stay quiet. If the law is struck down and railroads push a 10 hour day, a strike will ensue. Brotherhood heads issued a cautious circular noting the measure takes effect next January 1.
A party of 20 revellers including 12 women fled in a chaos at the Seven Oaks Inn in Fast Braintree as Chief of Police Galvin and eight officers from Braintree and Weymouth smashed the door in a liquor raid. All occupants were captured.
Officers confiscated 240 bottles of beer and three gallons of various hard liquors. The guests and proprietress Mrs. Grace A Larsen were allowed to leave after their names were recorded. In the morning Alfred Garrit a 16 year old drove an express wagon with beer barrels to a secluded spot when Chief Galvin and his squad halted the load. They claimed the beer was for Italian picnickers from Quincey.
National League contenders Pittsburg edged Chicago 7 to 6 in a tense opener while Chicago defeated St. Louis 4 to 2 in the second game. American League recaps show Detroit 5 Cleveland 0 and Chicago 1 St. Louis 0.

A series of traffic accidents leaves seven year old Charles Swan dead in Boston after a trip to the Public Library, and others including Arthur Vasallo in Cliftondale, Mrs Lottie Johnson in Jamaica Plain, Louis Shackman in Ipswich, Mrs Sarah Dickinson in Worcester, Mrs Nettie Tourigney in Somerville, Mrs Bridget Foran in Auburndale, Martin Maloney in Auburndale, Margaret Burroughs in Lexington, James Hollien in Brockton, and a Taunton crowd injury incident.
Warren D. Kent of Auburn operating a touring car rammed into a crowd of 300 on Main street. He accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, injuring twenty people, two seriously, before help arrived in Taunton.
Boston plans its biggest Labor Day parade in years with about 30 000 workers marching forenoon through the city. Governor McCall will review the procession at the State House and Mayor Curley at City Hall with P Harry Jennings of the Boston Central Labor Union serving as chief marshal.
Francisco Madero senior prominent Mexican mine owner and father of the late Mexican president was found dead in his New York City home from heart disease. He aged about 64 years. He fled here after the assassinations of his sons Janesco and Gustavo, with the latter once a revolution arm. President Madero was killed in February 1913.
Mexico City Sept 38 Municipal elections were held nationwide and no disorders were reported. Returns will be slow to come in as a government decree directed state governors and military commanders not to interfere with the ballots.
Arthur E. Vassallo of Cliftondale died after a joy ride ended at a steep hill foot near Woburn. Mrs. Nettie Tourigney of Somerville lies dying at Winchester Hospital. Two others, Walter Rice of Clif tondale and a woman known as Kittie of Charlestown, suffered injuries.
A big automobile leaped onto the sidewalk injuring several persons and damaging a street railway waiting room and a drug store plate glass. James H. Norris and Tel ham Creamer were hospitalized in serious condition. Norris had glass removed from his abdomen. Kent, an auto agent, was jailed on charges of reckless driving and endangering the public.
Reports from the metropolitan police district indicate 25 houses and some outbuildings sustained slight damage along with two water mains cut. Three horses were killed and a fire occurred at gas works while other areas reported only minor damage to cottages and a church. no military damage reported.

A car was found demolished against a telegraph pole on Cambridge Street near Russell around 2 a.m. Yesterday. Vassallo and Mrs. Tourigney were unconscious in the wreck with two other passengers. One man, Rice, attempted to remove the engine plate to erase ownership details while witnesses Chandler and Delaney arrived at the scene.
Patrick McAloon, born in England and founder of Lynn Massachusetts shoe makers, died in Topeka at age 100 years and ten months. He weathered 1877 losses, moved west to Kansas 35 years ago, and helped create the McKay Sewing Machine used to stitch shoes. He leaves a widow and four children including son T A McAloon in federal government service.
Boston officials weigh postponing the opening of public schools due to infantile paralysis. Health Commissioner Dr Francis X Mahoney and other health officials will present data to the School Committee at 11 AM in a public conference. Chairman Dr David D Scannell supports deferral if health authorities advise against opening.
Dwight P. Dilworth a lawyer was shot and killed in an automobile in Van Cortlandt Park near the golf links. A young woman Miss Mary McNiff aged 19 was with him when two men wearing caps appeared from the darkness and fired three shots.
Miss McNiff fled nearly a mile from a park attack where two men halted her and Dilworth, 40, of Montclair New Jersey, demanded surrender then fired. A flagman led her to Kings Bridge police and she returned with investigators but the assailants were not found. Dilworth died at the scene from three bullet wounds.
Mary Brown aged 49 of 47 Mead Street Charlestown fell into the Mystic River from the Malden bridge late last night. Lawrence Riley and Timothy Murphy drawtenders at the bridge rescued her by boat and she was taken to the Relief Hospital.
Heine Green, steward of the steamship Amerika docked at East Boston, was beaten by several men near the North Ferry on August 18. He was treated at Boston City Hospital and released the next day after his condition improved from a formerly critical state.
