Amateur Golf Championship Second Round Ends at Garden City

Eight 36 hole matches were decided in the second round at Garden City Club today with two going to extra holes. The quality of golf was excellent and at times spectacular across the field.

Travers Ouimet Match Draws Crowds at Midweek Golf

Interest centered on Champion Travers versus young Massachusetts champion Francis Ouimet as spectators packed the midweek championship. Ouimet lost 3 up 2, but earned praise for his showing. Veterans Walter J. Travis battled Fraser Hale to a near draw after extra holes, then Hale lost on the 3rd extra hole as Travis seized the lead before halving the last. Results from the second round include Evans over Byers 1 up, Reid over Webb 6 up 4, Travers over Ouimet 3 up 2, and others with close margins. At Lewiston Maine on September 3 two of three races at the Maine State fair ran in split heats but offered few features. Lady Wilkes took the 2:20 pace easily while Baron Sidnit narrowly beat Hiram in the 2:20 trot. Lady's Sister won the 2:24 pace in straight heats.
