A burglar held six women at gunpoint in the house of William Carr at 1183 Bennington street East Boston yesterday afternoon. He ransacked the residence and made off with jewelry and money worth about $900 before slipping away while Miss Mary C Carr escaped through a back passage and police were alerted.
New Haven Sept 3 A public inquiry by the Interstate Commerce Commission into the Bar Harbor express disaster near New Haven will begin Friday. Twenty one dead and five dying mark the wrecks blamed on general operation and management failures over the past years.
Five mildly insane prisoners tunneled under a 16 foot wall at the State asylum in Middleboro to escape. Thomas Sullivan of Springfield and John Melia of Newton were recaptured in Bridgewater. Dean Dempsey Edward F Russell and James O Dolan remained at large at a late hour. None considered dangerously insane. All had minor offenses and were trusted inmates.
A 300 pound woman wedged between seats on a Northeastern Massachusetts railroad car at Salisbury Beach caused a 20 minute delay and disrupted the day’s schedule as police and civilians freed her from the seat.
Charles E Brown twelve years old of 408 Park street Dorchester was taken to City Hospital after leaving yesterday to join his friend who had cut his foot with an axe and was run over by an automobile.
Fifty officials of the Boston Elevated Railway Company receive annual salaries totaling 279 620 up to June 30 1913. One more official earned 25 000 bringing the total to 304 626. General William A Bancroft president of the company is paid 36 000 a year plus 10 for each TI executive committee meeting he attends.
Prior to last July J O Wardwell was the second highest paid with a 25000 salary and left June 30. C S Sergeant now ranks second at 20000. Matthew C Brush and others earn 15000 with several at 12000 to 9500. The high salary list includes 41 men earning 1500 to 7500. Three hundred L employees heard attorney John P Feeney read the figures to the special arbitration board amid claims of wage discrimination by L station masters and a 12 weekly income for an extra conductor.
The Sturtevant Blower Works strike ended with a mass meeting at French's Opera House approving a return to work. A 227 to 27 vote favored resuming duties. 14 ballots were blank. Workers will resume at the same pre strike wages, with terms agreed after talks with manager E B Freeman.
S. H. Harrison Co. offers last season's fall and winter stock of suits and overcoats at less than half value. Suits and Overcoats priced at 15. 18. 20. and 22 dollars now 9.75. Located at 662 672 Washington St. corner Beach.
A horse drawing a carriage with Edward Ginn Jr and Miss Ginn and other Winchester residents ran wild on Highland avenue toward a railroad crossing. Policemen Daniel Kelley and William Callahan swerved the horse, preventing a collision with an approaching freight train. Miss Ginn escaped by leaping from the carriage and was later taken home, with minor injuries reported.
Sept 3 London man David Wolffsohn was elected president of the Zionist Congress in Vienna.
In East Boston and Revere marshes a burglar was chased by two policemen and hid in ditches. The Carr girl’s bravery helped ensure the thief’s capture as he surfaced for air and surrendered with a revolver visible. Jewelry valued near $900 was recovered from the second and third floors.
Ex-President Taft was named president of the American Bar Association at Montreal's annual meeting. New officers include Secretary George Whitelock, Treasurer Frederick Wadham, and executive committee members Hollis Bailey, Aldis Brown, William Burgess, John Voorhees, and William Stouke. Moorfield Storey urged penal reform and indeterminate sentences to treat criminals as sick rather than bad men.
Harry K. Thaw suffers a nervous collapse in Quebec and longs for the end of the ordeal. He was briefly released from Sherbrooke jail on habeas corpus and then detained again by immigration authorities in Coticook. A board of inquiry will decide his fate, with possible extradition to New York looming.

American League games saw New York beat Boston 11 to 4 and Philadelphia down Washington 4 to 3. Hermann Dudley Murphy and fellow artists visited Marblehead Neck to challenge beach access rights. After being ordered off by Miss Mary Brigge Brackett and her father Robert C Bridge they left with their painting equipment. Bridge says the artists pulled down awnings and took possession of the premises.
