Ferry Collision Sinks Chicago Ferry Near New York

The Pennsylvania ferryboat Chicago was cut in two by an Old Dominion or Savannah line steamer at 12 35 AM on the New York side. Of 30 to 40 aboard, four women and a dozen horses are reported lost or drowned. Passengers used life preservers and swam ashore. rescue efforts involved tugs and searchlights. The other vessel's identity remains uncertain, with strong evidence pointing to City of Augusta of the Savannah line. Captain Durham survived with most crew. Fireman Fromme is unaccounted.
