The Pavonia, built in 1852 by G & J Thompson on the Clyde at £500000, is a 5500 ton iron vessel with 200 cabin and 1000 steerage capacity. It features a full width saloon, a public promenade, eleven water tight compartments, dual steering gear, and numerous geared and electrical systems. Her first trip was New York on Sept 13 1882 and the second to Boston on Oct 2 1882, after which she operated between Boston and Liverpool.

Lake Huron Run Aground To Save From Sinking

The Beaver line steamer Lake Huron from Liverpool struck a submerged boulder between Bellechasse and St. Laurent light in the channel. Six feet of water in the fore compartment forced the pilot to beach the vessel amid rapid flooding. Damaged cargo fills three compartments up to between decks. efforts aim to move her to Louise Basin for discharge and survey. Built at Glasgow, the 4640 ton ship faces extensive damage.

Philadelphia Oct 29 The Association of Collegiate Alumnae held its quarterly meeting at Bryn Mawr College with attendees from Boston New York Baltimore Washington and nearby areas. President Alice Freeman presided and papers on school girls work conditions and the endowments and needs of women’s colleges were presented with a Boston branch formally recognized. Luncheon followed and new college buildings and grounds were opened for inspection.

Sawyer Opposes Ten-Hour Law in New Hampshire Canvass

Charles H. Sawyer, Republican gubernatorial candidate, writes Representative E H Gilman of Exeter arguing a ten-hour law would harm manufacturing. Police arrest man for assault on 11 year old in front of Commercial Street

Officers McCarthy and Floyd at Station 1 arrested Martin Welch last evening for assault and battery on Dennis Donahoe a boy 11 years old with a blunt instrument in front of 449 Commercial street. The lad was taken home and Dr Wilbrick says he is in a critical condition.
