Many men too weak to walk ashore at the wharf as the Bay State arrives with the Sixth. Misinterpreted signals up the bay added worry about the condition of the sailors. Julian Kelly reports.
W J E Spicer of Melrose Massachusetts who was postmaster at Guantanamo Bay died in Cuba after two months in office. He leaves a widow and three children. A Yellow fever case was reported among the troops at Guantanamo and Captain Jose Proval of the Cuban army was buried with military honors. Major Norman, surgeon at Guantanamo, reports only one yellow fever case among the men who is convalescing. Walter R E Spicer served nearly twenty years in the Boston Post Office in various departments.
The train carrying President and Mrs. McKinley and their party arrived at the Pennsylvania railroad station shortly before 8 o clock this morning. The return trip from the Philadelphia peace jubilee was calm and the party appeared in high spirits.
The hospital ship Bay State arrives at Central wharf with 138 sick and convalescent soldiers from Porto Rico. Governor Wolcott greets them as two Sisters of Charity stand on deck. Several men are carried ashore on stretchers, and families from Lowell Framingham Fitchburg and Concord welcome their men.
