Triumphal Welcome for the Sixth Massachusetts Regiment in Boston
Governor Wolcott greeted the Sixth Massachusetts as they arrived aboard the transport Mississippi at Pier 4. Ten thousand residents crowded the docks along Congress through Beacon streets to cheer Colonel Rice and the returning troops. Police opened the pier doors as a horse bearing Rice led the march, while 6000 onlookers shouted approval and asked what was the matter with Rice.
