A wall fell during remodeling last night, reducing four structures to rubble in Portland street. Pedestrians were knocked off balance as bricks rained into tenement rooms. A dramatic Republican meeting at Arena Hall drew nearly 15,000, with the nominee pledging an American president and a strong cabinet.
A burglar entered at 257 Columbia Street around 11:30 last night waking 15 year old Adeline Burgess. He struck her with a potato masher, she escaped via a second story window, and one tooth was knocked out. Suspect wore a black mask brown overcoat gray cap. police have not found him.
Dr Benjamin Franklin Trueblood a noted publicist died at his home in Newton Highlands after a long illness He leaves a wife and two daughters The funeral is set for Saturday and the body will go to Wilmington Ohio for burial He was born in Salem Indiana in 1847 He served as president of Wilmington College 1874 1879 and of Penn College 1879 18 He was secretary of the American Peace Society from 1892 to 1915 and later honorary secretary He was a well known author and lecturer on international topics.
A building collapse in Portland causes debris to rain onto Hotel Napoli dining room and nearby structures. Roofs and windows shatter, dust fills streets, firemen search for missing workers, and four buildings are crushed including the W A Snow Iron Works site. No bodies found. Damages run into thousands.
El Paso Texas October 26 Lieutenant Colonel Perry in command of the Eighth says he plans to begin loading equipment for the Ninth tomorrow and hopes to start the regiment for home Saturday morning. Some officers hope to depart Sunday but others doubt the schedule.
Finis was added to a report detailing Colonel Frank A. Graves's resignation after the President approved it. Graves, who joined as a private and served generations with the unit, reports eye ulcers and plans medical treatment before possibly returning home via the West Coast. Georgia infantry relief sections are due tonight and tomorrow after a railroad bridge fire caused a long detour. Captain H. Dwight Cushing, brigade officer of the day, to greet the Georgians and ensure comfort and courtesy.
Ex-President Roosevelt targets Professor Munsterberg of Harvard and professional German-Americans in Chicago speeches at Stockyards Pavilion and Auditorium Theatre. He accuses Munsterberg of aiding Germany and defends harmony with Hughes campaign managers while denouncing loyalty issues amid a fiery rally.
The Cotton Manufacturers Association rejected the Fall River Textile Council's request for a 10 percent wage increase effective November 6. The decision announced tonight sets the stage for a looming labor dispute in Fall River, Massachusetts.
Upon notice of the manufacturers decision a special council meeting of five textile unions voted to convene all textile unions for next Wednesday night to decide on a general strike.
