Bold Express Robbery on St Louis Train Nets Heavy Cash Grab
In St Louis on Oct 26 a robber using a forged letter posing as a new rider tricked messenger Fotheringham aboard an Adams express car on the St Louis and San Francisco line. The thief overpowered, bound, gagged, and bound the messenger to his safe, then looted gold from the car before fleeing. Authorities estimate the haul at around 40 to 50 thousand dollars with the safe still intact for coins. The robber, about six feet tall, 200 pounds, wore a dark overcoat and hid a revolver on his person as the train reached Pacific and Union stations.
