The Rev Herbert Johnson, delivering a sermon at Warren Avenue Baptist Church, stated that several white slavers within his congregation had attempted to abduct young girls from the church, signaling a troubling breach of trust and safety.
After a sermon, Pastor and Mr. Johnson warned of white slavers targeting young girls in the congregation. Suspected individuals were evicted and barred from future meetings as church leaders vowed strict vigilance and no leniency without proof. No prosecutions have occurred due to lack of verifiable evidence.
Two men died in a blaze that destroyed a second hand furniture shop in Nashua. Authorities believe Charles Conlon of Nashua and James Telly of Lowell were burned beyond recognition after entering the basement to sleep following a late-night closing. A smouldering cigar is suspected as the ignition.
Beryl Grogan Krause, a Cambridge girl, writes a final note to her mother from Buckeye Texas alleging mail tampering and declaring her intention to die by poison. Texas authorities have ruled the death a self-inflicted act and exonerated Rudolph Krause, the farm hand husband, based on the letter and investigation.
A young woman declares her husband innocent of mail tampering and writes Get me Steve before warning that she will be dead when the letter arrives. She explains the act is driven by desperation and aims to clear her husband as she takes poison. Continued on Page 6-Sixth Column.
October 25 funeral reports Bert Cary three of Colrain died instantly at 7 pm when a large automobile rolled and overturned after a head on collision with a smaller car. His wife and children and Mr and Mrs John Wolfe of New York were in the car. Wolfe was thrown clear. others pinned beneath the vehicle with minor injuries.
In Juarez on October 25 the Aguas Calientes peace conference plans to depose General Venustiano Carranza when it reconvenes. Villa and Zapata delegates will act with a Zapata contingent of 28 delegates, while Carranza delegates have largely departed and will not oppose. The Carranza side, convinced the conference is Villa-dominated, plans no opposition.
Allied and German actions dominate the battlefield brief. Roulers remains in German hands despite prior reports of capture. French forces occupy Thann and Alsace valleys while Germany reportedly eyes Canadian landings. Yser Ypres canal crossed by Germans after heavy fighting. Russian forces push back German rear guards near Warsaw amid clashes along Ravka Skerneka and Rylka. Montenegrins retreat on Austrian border as Allied counterattacks fail near Lille. German infantry regiment annihilated in Argonne north of La Chalade. French batteries on Meuse destroy three German guns including a heavy one.
London reports that across the Yser River west of Dixmude German forces are throwing thousands of troops in a desperate drive to breach allied positions. Reinforcements from Belgium garrisons and inland German cities indicate a supreme effort to reach Dunkirk despite high risk.

A Finance Commission report to Mayor Curley details city workers enjoying free use of city houses, some furnished with electric lighting water heating and telephone service. In addition to a $3000 yearly salary one employee reportedly has a city auto access to a city conservatory and city staff care for his cows and chickens.
The body of a woman found in Lake Quinsigmond with a double knotted cord around her neck was identified today as Mrs. Eliza Anna Robbins. The identification deepens the mystery surrounding her fate and suggests foul play.
The commission cites that Leonard Ross, general superintendent of the cemetery department, and his wife asked a Finance Commission representative for city payment of a maid. The Ross house cost the city 2756.35 in the last five years for furnishings, repairs, heat and light. Continued on Page 2-Third Column.
Mrs Robbins disappeared from her father George Thompson's home at 3 Jeanette Street near the lake on April 10, 1912 and has never been heard from since. Her hat and handbag were found two and a half years later at the lakeside spot near where her body was recovered. Medical examiners say the body could not have been in the water more than six months, leaving the two years unaccounted for. Verdict: death due to drowning or possible self-inflicted death, per Baker, Shanahan, and Leary.
LIP Oct 25 After a 13 hour 15 minute deliberation the Carman jury failed to reach a verdict on the murder of Mrs Louise Bailey. Ten jurors favored acquittal and two favored conviction leading to discharge. Mrs Carman collapsed and bail relief was sought.
A juror told a newspaper man that nine fellow jurors admitted at the Garden City Hotel that they had decided to vote not guilty of Mrs. Carman after her direct testimony and before cross examination, and would stick to that verdict until the end.
