Miss Martha Palmer of Sharon, who disappeared September 12 and was presumed dead, reappeared at Jenkins Pond camp today claiming she spent 40 days in the wilds under the guidance of a "white spirit" who she says watched over her.
Miss Palmer, after six weeks in the woods living on berries and acorns within a three mile radius, is found and taken to Falmouth hospital. She says the White Word led her to safety and admits no harm from the experience. Sheriff H. H. Lawrence oversees her return as her sister Mrs. Ellen Clark travels to fetch her.
Alfred Uliven, 65, inventor of the Dewey Dip and a walking-on-winter device, died of gas poisoning at Frost Hospital Chelsea last night. He resided at 779 Ocean Street Reveré and was a noted Beach resort character.
French troops in Alsace seized Alt Kirche at bayonet point. Allied forces near Armentieres made limited gains as German assaults pressed La Bassee. Russians push Germans back on the Vistula, capturing prisoners and arms. Berlin reports counter actions near Ossowetz. Karlsruhe reportedly sinks British ships off Teneriffe with 400+ prisoners. US protests Britain over seizure of the Platuria oil tanker in Scotland.
London dispatch reports in heavy fighting along the Belgian front as German assaults falter. In Alsace the French seize Altkirch, a key town on the Mullhausen route, in a bold stroke aimed at boosting morale and securing strategic positions.
Paris reports a succinct bulletin claiming Altkirch was captured by bayonet and that Mulhausen remains a focus in the Alsace drive. French forces under General Pau had previously seized Altkirch before retreating, with the advance stirring Paris and Bordeaux amid the ongoing war.
Helen Taft leads Bryn Mawr students in a protest over the college cut system. Miss M Carey Thomas rebukes the action, endorses the rule for students, then leaves as Taft and others speak. A student strike appears likely.
London reports the government has prohibited all sugar imports into Great Britain from any source to curb Austro German supply. Direct imports from Austria and Germany were already banned, but neutrals could still ship. total ban aims to cripple enemy commerce while stockpiles cover months.
Mrs Elizabeth Grogan of Cambridge origin battles Texas courts for custody of daughter Beryl Grogan Krause s body after her suicide on a cotton ranch. Authorities say death by own hand while Grogan s family and relatives claim foul play and demand an inquest. Dr Moore confirms Beryl confessed to taking paris green in a personal crisis and exonerates her husband Rudolph Krause.
Upon notification Mrs. Grogan reiterated her belief that foul play caused her daughter's death. Dr Moore says a letter of explanation left for the mother by the poison victim has not been received and she suspects authorities in Texas are holding it.

Washington Oct 23 financial forces of the government and a circle of prominent bankers and British representatives were united in seeking a solution to readjust the foreign exchange market, addressing conditions created by the European war.
The Federal Reserve Board Sir George Paish Basil Blackett and top New York bankers spent over three hours reviewing the crisis. They predicted smooth resolution of major problems and outlined plans to settle obligations with cash. A $100 million gold pool and $80 million from a New York syndicate may cover New York City debts, with exchanges possibly reopening in early 1915 after a joint committee meeting.
An explosion in the basement of the old Mann School in Lowell injures pupil John J. Kinney who loses an arm and possibly fatally hurt. teacher Clarence Leseur loses a hand as brickwork buries both under debris. Rushed to hospital, rescue crews respond as authorities investigate the blast.
A hydrogen oxygen pressure tank exploded during after hours welding at Mann school, part of Lowell Industrial School. The building suffered extensive damage but most pupils had left. Leseur lost a hand yet crawled from bricks to safety, while four instructors assisted. Fire crews responded and found injured student Kenney beneath debris.

Washington reports Congress remains quorateless in both houses and cotton belt Senators and Representatives appealed to President Wilson for aid to secure cotton relief legislation and clear the way for final adjournment of the session.
After repeated blocking of adjournment by obstructive tactics the cotton relief supporters formed a committee to seek a White House audience but the President was unavailable due to a State Department conference and a Y M C A address in Pittsburg. Democratic leaders failed to reach an adjournment agreement and Southern members vowed to press obstructive tactics, likely prolonging the session past the elections.
In Mineola New York Mrs Florence Carman faces a possible verdict as the Carman case nears its end. Key witnesses included Mrs Carman and Mrs Valance while prosecutors prepare rebuttal to defend the murder claim. The jury is expected to retire after the judge charges and closing arguments.
