Reports say Ute Indians have slain Sergeant Baker on the Sioux River reservation. Unconfirmed accounts claim other settlers were killed and scalped. Fort Meade troops to pursue the braves as the situation remains very serious.
In New York on October 25 financiers were hopeful but telegrams urged Governor Hughes to declare a legal holiday. The Clearing House Association planned to issue clearing house certificates to settle balances among banks and release currency for daily business.
An interracial romance traced from Norwood Massachusetts to Providence Rhode Island for a wedding, then a New York honeymoon and European departure. Bride Lillian Maria Smith of 34 Day street Norwood and groom Adam Colgate of Paris Texas married in Providence. Colgate’s sister Ethel helped connect them. Smith had previously married and been divorced in California.
John A. Coulthurst, ex Representa tive of Ward 23 and former Democratic State committee secretary, received the unanimous Independence League nomination for mayor at a city committee meeting last night. He will challenge both party nominees on a municipal reform platform and has severed ties with the Democratic Party, with his resignation en route to the state chair.
Former Representative Coulthurst declares candidacy for mayor of Boston seeking the Independence League nomination and other endorsements. He pledges civil service, nonpartisan municipal reform, retrenchment and fiscal restraint while opposing further debt.
Madrid reports specialists declare King Alfonso's case hopeless and plan to move him to London for treatment by a renowned tuberculosis expert. The king has battled the disease he feared would claim him, following his father's fate, amid consternation at court.
Stephen J. Clougherty, a well known South Boston patrolman, died suddenly yesterday leaving an estate valued at $20,000. The officer served with the police department for many years and was widely respected. His death was unexpected and shocked the community. He is survived by his widow and a son. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Patrolman Stephen J. Clougherty of the City Point station, long a bachelor in service, died at his home 42 East Eighth Street South Boston yesterday morning after a 10 day struggle with an intestinal trouble. He had patrolled one route for over a quarter of a century, including his native homestead.
Clougherty left an estate estimated close to 20 000 with much said to have been left to South Boston institutions and charities. Rumors of a probate contest circulate as the will's contents are partly known. He was the son of Captain and Mrs. Thomas Clougherty, long known in the peninsula. Appointed October 11, 1881, he joined the police force at the Lagrange street station and was moved to City Point the next day. He then served on the Thomas Park route extending to Dorchester street.
Martin Sheridan smashed the distance pole vault world record with 2Sft Sin. The previous mark was 27ft 7 in set by Wil bert Baird of Philadelphia on Dec. 40. H A Gidney of Boston lost his high jump title to H F Porter who cleared 6ft Lin. Coe of Boston won the eight round shot put with Gift. 2.in.
Reports from New York on October 25 describe Consolidated Steamship changes that bring J P Morgan & Co and the New York New Haven Hartford railroad into the Morse merger. The move signals a potential coastwise consolidation to control Atlantic and Gulf shipping lines. An officer noted that already formed groups must be managed for stockholders.

Through P. D. Daley of the Carriage and Cab Drivers' Union the stablemen strike at Kenny and Clark barn was settled. The men receive a two dollar weekly wage increase as requested by the union. Hours of labor remain unchanged.
