Calabrian Earthquakes Leave Thousands Homeless

In Calabria and Sicily a prolonged series of earthquakes has killed many and driven about a thousand people from homes. Two hundred bodies were recovered by six o'clock tonight as tremors continue. People sleep in the open despite rain, seeking refuge in churches only briefly, and pray to the Virgin as sacred relics are shown in Catanzaro cathedral to calm fears.

Stroudsburg Youth Sentenced to 155 Years for Murder

In Stroudsburg Pennsylvania on October 24 a jury convicted Benjamin Courtright of second degree murder for shooting Harvey Crow and acquitted his mother. Courtright, not yet 21, received a 155 year penitentiary sentence.

Scollar Target of Probers Over Tax Collection Practices

Report criticizes the poll tax and property tax collection by the current collector Exter ordinary and staff. It notes poll taxes rose from 20.3 percent in 1905 06 to 48.5 percent in 1906 07 while overall department expenses surged from 75 900 to 122 500 annually. City council members also failed to pay 1906 poll taxes and waivers for delinquents allegedly served political aims.

City Collector Scollard Proposed for Administrative Overhaul

The Finance Commission recommends sweeping changes in the City Collector office. It urges assigning deputy collectors to field work with daily reports and daily money returns, modernizing book-keeping, extending tax collection hours, and reducing deputy and general clerks. The commission notes treasury and auditing depart ments are largely satisfactory. It also recommends the collector be appointed to hold office.

Motor Yeggs Blow Up Safe Wakefield Depot

Drowned crew of the Clara J Sylvia in Georges Bank hurricane

Ten sailors perished from the schooner Clara J Sylvia after a hurricane off Georges Bank. The 17 member crew lost seven boats overturned by towering seas. The seven survivors, exhausted, struggled to reach the vessel and were buffeted by the storm for hours.
