Navy records claim an ancient English friar skilled in astronomy and navigation anticipated the North Pole visit centuries before Captain Robert E. Peary. The remark comes as Peary faces a temporary cloud for not reporting to duty.
Navy officials say Captain Peary on leave for Arctic research may resume active duty. Acting Secretary Winthrop noted no decision yet on his assignment. Peary has been on leave for ten years under an understanding he would devote time to exploration. He recently was promoted to captain after a senior officer retired.
A trotting horse valued at 600 dollars escaped its keeper at Commercial wharf and plunged into the harbor water. It swam about a half mile through lighters and towboats with six boats in pursuit as it headed southward.
Captain Frank Foote of the Boston Tow Boat Company rescued an exhausted mare at Lewis wharf after dropping a line and guiding the horse ashore. Foote recounted the mare swimming near Commercial wharf, weaving past a dory with three men attempting to seize the head. He noted the sight as a rare spectacle of a horse swimming and evading capture.
Mrs. Elsie Supple of Dorchester testified in a $15 000 alienation suit filed by her husband. She described influence by Mrs Minnie E Wightman of Brookline and her husband, the defendants, accused of alienating Supple's affections for a year and depriving her of society.

In Portsmouth New Hampshire on October 24 a father and Police Officer Hussey searched for a son who had left home in Haverhill Massachusetts nearly a year ago. The pursuit ended when the father accidentally bumped into his daughter at the depot in Portsmouth. She told police the son could be found in Hartford confirming the mystery.

In Malden Oct 24, Miss Mary Peters 46 Echo street was assaulted in Forestdale woods near her home at noon. A man about 30, well dressed, jumped from bushes and tried to silence her. she fought back and he escaped. Police halted a woods search after failing to locate him.
