A heavy cement ceiling collapsed in the steam room of the Turkish baths at 32 Suffolk street in Malden. Seven men were injured, three seriously, as patrons fled the wreckage and crowds gathered outside in a frenzied scene. Names and injuries of several victims are listed, including back leg and arm wounds.
Wireless calls for help attributed to the tank steamer Oklahoma prompted a widespread search from Woods Hole to Newport. The Acushnet relayed signals to Newport naval station and on to vessels and land stations, triggering one of the era’s most diligent wireless hunts tonight.
For over an hour stations and ships relayed requests for the Oklahoma’s location. The Nan tucket Shoals lightship broadcast the call repeatedly, but the Oklahoma could not be found. Officials suspect a practical joker signed the vessel’s signature, while wireless crews faced a busy, anxious hour.
Mrs. Catherine J. Balch was arrested in a downtown hotel and faces court to determine if she is the woman passing worthless Philadelphia checks in Boston department stores. Pinkerton detectives say forged checks were signed in her husband’s name, a man described as chief engineer of a steamer between New York and Colon, Panama.
The Rev. Frederick Morland Gray aged 78 died at his Cambridge home on Hawthorne Street after a long illness. Former rector at Holderness School New Hampshire and chaplain of St. Agnes School Albany NY. Survived by wife and daughter Mrs. Henry C Stetson widow of Henry Co. Stetson.
Ottawa reports a vast mobilization to recover the balloon America II with Canada’s aid from Ottawa and Toronto. Sir Wilfrid Laurier and Sir James Whitney coordinate federal and provincial efforts as 10 000 officials work on the National Transcontinental railway from Superior Junction to Latulque, 100 miles north of Quebec.
Miss Alwida H. Harlow and Frank A. Chute wed yesterday afternoon at 671 Somerville avenue in a ceremony hoped to aid the bride who is slowly sinking from typhoid fever. The couple married with slight chances of living for the bride.
The wedding of Miss Harlow to her fiancé, after a 15 year engagement, was performed by Rev. C W Petit at the First Pentecostal Church in West Somerville. Family and medical staff attended as the bride, weakened by typhoid and relapses, found renewed strength after the ceremony.
The Chicago Cubs suffered their fourth defeat as Connie Mack’s Athletics clinched the world title. Each winning Athletics player earns about $2062, Cubs around $1375, with totals and receipts noted as the season ends at Shibe Park. The banner will fly next year proclaiming Mackmen champions of the world.
Bay View Lodge of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen calls on organized labor to defeat Draper and Lodge in the governor race. The declaration favors Gene N. Foss, citing labor needs and alignment with the Democratic platform for the people.
Frank A. Stone, 59, of 15 Mr. Auburn Street, Cambridge, was badly injured when his car skidded and overturned in Sudbury. His wife escaped unhurt. Stone suffered a skull fracture, scalp wound, and facial bruises. He was taken to Marlboro Hospital in critical condition.
Two of three boys charged with burglary and arson at a store on 1260 Commonwealth Avenue Brighton were caught after a chase. Residents of the Babcock Hill district in Brookline were awakened by a fusillade of revolver shots as firefighters responded to the fire at the Goldie Rattleman store.
At 1 30 AM Officer Fleming saw three youths run on Harvard Street near Thorndike. He fired shots in the air to stop them. one surrendered and was identified as Bernard Carr 14 of 109 Kneeland Street Boston. Wier later captured James Kerchie 18 of 214 South Street Boston. another youth escaped.
Mrs. W. G. Clark of Lakeside avenue announced the birth of her third set of triplets in Cleveland. The family Bible also records four pairs of twins and that she is the sister of 20 brothers. Her first marriage produced two twins and a triplet, while her second produced the rest.
The Chicago Cubs failed to capitalize against pitcher Coombs in late innings. The opponent's relief staff shut down key hitters, sealing a tight game and a loss for the Cubs.
