In Manchester New Hampshire on October 23 P M Hergt a Boston drummer for a liquor house met Frank Harris once from Lawrence. Harris and his wife brought Hergt to Suncook where he drank drugged ale and was robbed of 500 dollars and papers. A detective and City Marshal Jenkins traced the crime to Harris who was arrested and 232 dollars found hidden mostly under the floor of a hen house.
In Hartford on October 23 the annual Grand Division session of the Sons of Temperance met with 200 delegates from nearly every state division. The Grand Division reported 28 subordinate divisions, seven new this year, and 2735 members, up 930. Cash totals run about 100 dollars in subordinate divisions and 400 to 500 in the grand treasury. 13 deaths occurred this year. Officers elected include G W P George L Sanford New Haven G W A Mrs F M Hawley New Canaan grand scribe W A Beadan Hartford grand chaplain Rev T J Watt Stratford G C Mrs May C Bunnell Birmingham G S H L Woodward Hartford. It was voted not to raise per capita tax. Next semi annual meets set for Birmingham in April and annual meeting for Bridgeport in October.
In Montpelier the legislature met in a 2 30 p m joint session and elected officers including Truman C Phinney sergeant at arms Gen L G Kingsley brigadier general Theodore S Peck adjutant general Horace K Ide quartermaster general The board of supervisors of the insane was re elected The senate refused a third reading to a bill raising judges salaries.
Captain H. R. Radford, a noted real estate operator, died after three weeks illness in Kansas Cirr. He had planned to marry Miss Rogland of Aberty who was visiting Virginia. She was summoned by telegraph and they wed at his deathbed with his will leaving all property to his bride.
Fuller dispatches from Oct 15 report French forces at Tamsui overwhelmed by Chinese ambush after disguise plot. 106 French dead. Lespes offered rewards for recovered corpses, flags lost. Rain fell Wednesday night across Petersburg Virginia extending along the Norfolk and Western line to Lynchburg and along the Atlantic Coast Line to Weldon. South side of Virginia badly needs rain as conditions remain dry.
