Reporters predict Grover Cleveland will secure a majority against the commission house Blaine and Butler in Boston. The campaign narrative centers on anti corruption and reform rhetoric as votes count.
Tom Pratt gathered Republican manufacturers to rally workers, printing a circular with a claimed visit by Hon. James G. Blaine to boost turnout. Blaine was absent, as Pratt knew, while he stayed out west advocating the bloody shirt.
The Bay State audience hears Judge McCafferty defend the Democratic Party against Grover Cleveland and favor Butler delegates to seize Massachusetts electoral votes. Speakers Galvin and Butler attack Chicago choices, with Butler urging peaceful, then potentially violent, settlement of labor and capital conflict. A large crowd in South Boston packed Wait's hall as Gen. Butler railed at Boston newspapers and attacked the Herald over Cleveland letters. Speakers Josiah Quincy Moorfield Storey William Everett attacked Blaine and urged honest government, while announcements covered upcoming rallies and party organization notes across Boston and surrounding towns.

The Commissioner of railroads W H Armstrong submitted to the secretary of the interior his annual report. He details total indebtedness of subsidized Pacific railroads as of June 30 1884 and notes payments into the treasury as credits. Also cites post office expenditures and deficits, patent office decisions favoring Bell in telephonic interference, and a Panama railroad protest against canal damage. The political survey describes Democratic prospects with New York and other states optimistic for Cleveland and Hendricks, while Republicans show demoralization and defections amid party tensions.
About 1000 spectators in New York watched Providence champions defeat the Metropolitan club 3 to 1. Keefe allowed three earned runs in the fifth as Gilligan Denny and Farrell produced key hits including a home run by Denny. The Mets played solid defense but could not overcome the Providence offense before darkness ended the game.
Paris Texas October 23 The court refused injunctions brought by farmers and landowners allied with Western Union to block the Baltimore and Ohio telegraph line along the Texas Pacific railroad right of way. Damages to the rail line were deemed potentially irreparable, though individual losses were small. farmers have already been compensated by Western Union.
Five robbers entered the Phelps family vault in Binghamton and forced open the tomb of Robert Phelps but fled when detected by detectives. A $5000 suit over embalming costs spurred speculation that the crime aimed to test preservation or to steal the body for a ransom.
Columbus Ohio October 24 The official returns reported by the secretary of state show party results for state offices with Republican Robinson leading for secretary of state over Democrat Newman and Prohibition Morris. In supreme judge race Republican Johnson leads Democrat Martin with Greenback and Prohibition minor contenders also listed. Board of Public Works winner Flickinger tops Republican slate, Democrat Benfer second, with Prohibition Kirkendall and Greenback Ogden trailing.
Thousands of Republicans in New York express disgust over the county convention action that sold out a ticket. Blaine leaders fear losses in votes and worry about impact on New Jersey and Connecticut. Plans to reconvene the county convention and nominate a new city ticket face opposition from Elkins and Jones who seek to rebalance the slate amid intra party tensions. The machine factions clash as rivals accuse each other of manipulation and retaliation.
Alfred Steckler declares irreconcilable opposition to James G Blaine citing unfounded labor hostility claims. He says he has advised New York trade and labor groups totaling about 30 000 voters and endorses Steckler for judge of the court of common pleas while condemning misrepresentation and calumny. Steckler renews support and wishes Blaine victory.
The Columbia Cleveland and Hendricks club hosted a large audience at Chickering hall with Yale students present. Hon. A. S. Hewitt spoke claiming he wrote every word of the tariff plank while Gov. Cleveland sent a letter regretting his absence and praising the undergraduates’ judgment and faith in young thinkers.
Gen Parsons cites letters from Massachusetts and New York campaign clubs accusing Butler aides of orchestrating a lavish tour plan. Records claim Butler, Chandler and Elkins met at Rockingham House and arranged a parlor car, $250 daily, wines, and patronage control if Blaine fails.
Registration in Brooklyn signals a strong show for Governor Cleveland with Kings County expected to deliver at least 9,000 votes. The Buffalo News notes Butler’s palace car campaign expense to the national Republican committee, while independents report Republicans in New York City and Brooklyn voicing opposition to Blaine. J J McBride reports 75,890 campaign badges sold, 25,476 Blaine and Lodge badges among them.
A 10 cent matinee at the Royal theatre museum in Montreal drew 2000 spectators when a shout of fire sparked a panic. Women and children were knocked down in packed aisles and many were bruised or torn clothing. Officials assisted as crowds spilled into the streets. no fatalities reported, though several were carried away. Local by law against crowding was described as a dead letter despite police presence.
In New York on October 24 the prize fight between Jack Dempsey and Tom Henry for 100 a side ended with Dempsey victorious after six hard rounds. Dempsey landed the first blood in the opening round and knocked Henry down twice in the second. The remaining rounds repeated the pattern as Dempsey dominated.
In Montpelier on October 24 lawmakers set October 30 as the election date for supreme court judges. A bill allocating $5000 for the state exhibit at the national cotton exposition in New Orleans moved to a third reading. The house refused to shorten the bill introduction limit to November 10 by a large margin.
Martin Harrison, arrested in Hartford on October 24 for the murder of Ada Brown last Tuesday, lies in hospital with a self inflicted throat wound but recovering. Evidence now points to Harrison as the killer, contrary to initial beliefs that George W. Gregory murdered Brown and assaulted Harrison.
Kan sas City and Chicago railroad managers agreed to restore eastbound passenger rates at once in Chicago. The agreement does not change rates from Chicago to Kansas City.
