Rescue at Sea After 48 Hours Adrift in Gale
The steamer Philadelphia rescued lifeboat occupants after 48 hours adrift in a fierce gale. Their pump failed and life boats were lost, leaving the crew in grave danger before rescue arrived.

Wakefield Livery Stable Fire Destroys Block and Homes

Hathaway livery stable in Wakefield at 1:30 am spread to an engine house, Perkins's block, a laundry, and six to eight houses, destroying over 50000 dollars in property. Officer Rescues Passengers From Overturned Carryall in East Boston
Patrolman C. E. Bowley of Station 15 halted a runaway horse after a carryall carrying two men and two women tipped on Main Street near Green Street. The injured women were treated at Stacey's drug store. Miss Annie Whalen, with a nervous shock, was taken home to 26 Decatur Street East Boston. Other occupants were Miss Katie Whalen, Thomas Culler, and Janiel McNeil, all East Boston residents.

Fire devastates Salisbury Beach estates and stock rescued
A blaze swept Atlantic House and Cable House at Salisbury Beach burning both estates. Firefighters fought the flames as blooded stock were rescued from the Weld estate valued at ten thousand dollars.
Fire Engulfs Weld Estate Barn in Jamaica Plain
A large barn at the Weld estate near the West Roxbury line burned for seven hours destroying twenty five tons of hay and much livestock. The fire caused $8000 to $10000 in damage with routes of origin blamed on lantern explosions a careless worker and a dropped match. Local workers fought flames and residents watched as the roof collapsed and the blaze spread despite efforts to save animals.

Fifty first Iowa Volunteers Arrive in San Francisco
The Fifty first Regiment of Iowa Volunteers with 764 men and 46 officers, commanded by Colonel J. C. Lopez, arrived in San Francisco from Manila aboard the transport Senator. Adjutant-General Byers and 300 Iowa citizens greeted them at the Golden Gate. the regiment will be taken off the ship tomorrow.

A two story frame dwelling on Burns Street West Roxbury owned by Robert Minot trustee and occupied by Mrs J B Gill burned early this morning causing an estimated loss of 5000 to 6000. Firemen pulled box 532 at 1 19 and box 582 at 1 32 for the same blaze. Cause unknown.

The Rescued Grew Captain Hillgrove and Crew
Captain John Hillgrove of Parrshoro Nova Scotia and crew member Edward Hand of Philadelphia were injured when hurled against a mast. Second Mate Cornelius Flaherty from Galway Ireland and steward George B. Lloyd of New York were among the rescued crew. Additional seamen include August Lahl of Germany, C. Large South Chicago Fire Ravages Block
A business block in South Chicago burned early today causing about 120000 in losses. Fourteen buildings were destroyed and twelve people were injured though none seriously. An old Grand Central Hotel landmark burned as guests escaped with little clothing amid the blaze.

Rescue at Sea Aboard the Bark Iodine
Eight crew and four passengers survived by divine providence after the Iodine sank in mid ocean on Oct 18. With five feet of water in the hold and a disabled pump the ship faced extinction as mountain waves and hurricane winds battered the vessel. After forty eight hours of peril a steamer, the Leyland liner Philadelphian bound for Boston, appeared and rescued all remaining aboard before the Iodine’s final plunge. Captain Hillgrove praised the Philadelphian’s captain and crew as the rescued men recounted their ordeal aboard the doomed bark.
