The speaker argues wages rise in Europe due to limitations on internal trade, while the American system keeps wages down despite high production. He claims internal free trade boosts output, but tariffs on raw materials inflate costs, hurting labor, and provoking unemployment. He details how duties on wool, hemp, timber, coal, and iron undermine competitiveness, cause cycles of boom and bust, and fuel strikes and discontent.
