London dispatch reports Russian forces under Kuropatkin pushing forward after capturing Lone Tree Hill and Japanese guns. Desperate fighting across the line aims to drive Kuropatkin’s left wing toward the Shakhe River while both sides show dwindling ammunition and strained endurance after ten days of battle.
At Emmanuel Church the Episcopal convention debated making divorces harder by reducing statutory causes. A committee will study the measure after bishops and lay delegates discussed a plan to memorialize Congress to curb easy divorce. Delegates also named bishops for Cuba Hankow and Salt Lake and heard Brazil coffee remarks.
At the Shuman Corner men will find single and double breasted sack suits in hard finished worsteds priced at $22. Coats are cut long and shapely in steel mixtures bronze browns and mottled effects. Stout men and those above average height can be fitted accurately by A Shuman & Co.
From Mukden dated Oct 19 a m comes word that the Japanese left flank has been driven back with heavy losses and its retreat cut off. A Russian regiment is being rushed to the scene to complete the rout. Page 9 holds further war news.
Voters must register by 10 o'clock this evening in Boston and all cities for the upcoming state election. If your name is not on the registration list by then you cannot vote for President Governor or any other officer.
Henry F. Boles pled guilty to the murder of his wife and Patrolman McMurray in Brookline Court. The plea was postponed to Saturday as not allowed in the lower court. An autopsy followed, Mrs McMurray remains gravely ill, while relatives prepare funeral plans. A pension for Mrs McMurray is anticipated, with citizens forming a relief fund.
The jury found Philip Weinseimer, former president of the Building Trades Alliance, guilty of extortion in New York. He was remanded to the Tombs until October 28 for sentencing after a weeklong trial. The master plumber George J. Essig testified that $2700 was demanded to allow work on the Chatsworth apartment house to proceed.
A brief weather note for Boston and nearby areas predicts fair conditions on Wednesday. An accompanying ad touts Father John's Medicine as a cold remedy and throat soother, claiming cures and healing for ailments.

Firefighters confined the flames to the building after two alarms, with heavy smoke and water damage and a likely heavy loss. Crowds gathered as the fire illuminated the area and driven by fear of wider destruction.
W Bourke Cockran spoke to a large crowd in Central Armory Cleveland on Oct 18 as the first major Democratic gathering in Cleveland and Cuyahoga county. He defended Democratic principles, urged labor benefits from higher production, and criticized trusts and protective tariffs as fueling labor capital disputes and wealth inequality.
News from New York on October 18 reports Senator Thomas C. Platt and Senator Chauncey M. Depew meeting with Governor Odell at the Republican headquarters. A successor to Senator Depew was discussed with a suggestion that former Governor Black could be elected next winter.
In Bedford Ind on October 18 William J. Bryan arrived more than two hours late on his special train for the closing sixth day mass meeting. His voice showed strain yet a large attentive audience heard him discuss political issues for about an hour and a half.
