Last night in Boston the theatre scene offered a landmark. Wagner's Parsifal was heard for the first time and presented in English, complemented by other unusually prominent attractions, marking a red letter night for the amusement world.
London dispatches report General Kuropatkin fiercely defending the Shakhe River to avert a rout as Japanese troops press from behind. The left wing struggles for Tumin and Sakthoun passes while Kuropatkin must hold Hun River bridges to rejoin the main force. No end to the great battle is yet in sight.
In Brookline on Boylston street, Officer Joseph McMurray was shot and died after confronting Harry Bowles, husband of Mrs. Mary Bowles, 38, found murdered in the Bowles home. The 13 year old Mollie Rowan raised the alarm, leading to the gunfight and McMurray’s death. Bowles, detained in prison, is charged with both killings including Mary Bowles and Officer McMurray.
Boston audiences heard Wagner Parsifal in English at Tremont Theatre the first time in the city and in an event noted for its social as well as musical significance. Teutons with trombones opened motifs and Walter H. Rothwell conducted as the overture started at 7:45 as the curtain fell on Parsifal’s scene.
Reginald De Koven's Red Feather produced at the Hollis Street Theatre to a full house. The plot centers on a conspiracy to restore the rightful sovereign of Romancia, with the mysterious Red Feather revealed as Countess Huon von Draga. Strong book by Charles Klein and lively music, led by Miss Van Studdiford whose performance carries the show.
Fair outlook for Boston and vicinity with a two day period. A letter from John McGrehan of Paterson New Jersey praises Father John’s Medicine as a tonic and body builder and claims a 25 pound gain from its use. Not a patent medicine.
The Columbia Theatre reopens as Columbia Music Hall under J. K. Sparrow Amusement Co. with a two part show. The first part features Bennett and Rich, Clara Ballarini, and the Cral Damman troupe. The second reboots Weber and Fields Whoop-de-Doo with Fields, Lang, Manning, Lyons, Ward, Chute, Whitehouse and Bingham. The audience response was enthusiastic and the management plans the same program for the rest of the week.
Joe Walcott, famed colored boxer, killed Nelson Hall, colored, at a Union Park Street dance shortly after midnight. Hall, about 40, lived at 39 Corning Street. Walcott, shot in the right hand, is under police guard and charged with murder. seven witnesses detained as investigation proceeds. The revolver, bought in England, was shown in the crowded anteroom when a report and smoke erupted. Hall’s wife cried out as he died. Walcott remained at the scene awaiting police action. The dance is run by the South and West End Social Club. Walcott’s hand injury may end his boxing hand use.
