In a Florida gale the schooner Melrose sank near Palm Beach with eight crew and four passengers aboard. A great wave capsized the vessel just before sunset, killing Mrs Hallen and Mrs Weller. Mr Weller and others clung to rigging as the ship sank, later drifting ashore with the captain, mate, and two colored seamen.
