Worcester October 16 fire swept through the Day building a five story office block causing about 250000 in damage. Seven people were rescued from the block as flames peaked and a man was carried down a ladder unconscious. Seventy five women at a lodge meeting on the fifth floor escaped to the street.
Three alarms sounded as firemen were cut by glass hurled into the street by repeated hot air explosions. The blaze began on the fourth floor on the Walnut street side, climbed to the fifth and descended to the second before discovery. Attorney Louis Feingold saw the fire from his office across the street and notified the fire department. Continued on Page 6-Third Column.
In Mineola Supreme Court Mrs. Florence Carman faces a life trial. The State through District Attorney Smith contends she killed Mrs. Louise Bailey in a jealous rage, firing at her husband Dr. Edwin Carman.
Weeks states the prosecution will claim Mrs. Carman overheard a dictagraph conversation prompting her to kill her husband. She allegedly urged daughter Elizabeth to pause play, listened in, returned to her room, then descended again, exited via the kitchen, and fired through the front window that had previously exposed a nurse at her husband's office two months earlier.
Governor Walsh reopened the upland game season following rainfall that reduced fire danger. He urges heightened caution in the woods and fields and cooperation to protect wildlife and respect for law. The proclamation recalls suspending open season on Oct. 18 under Chapter 422 Acts of 1909 due to forest fire risk. DAVID T. WALSH.
Dr. P M Smith reports Father Philip J O'Donnell pastor of St James Church Harrison avenue remains ill with pneumonia and is about the same as yesterday still holding his own according to the medical officer’s latest bulletin.
In a filed report yesterday Harvard Cooperative Society directors announce a drop in the annual dividend from 9 percent to 8 percent. The European situation has hit the Harvard concern as hard as other businesses, leaving stockholders with a modest return.
The Rev. Albert R. Williams, pastor of Maverick Congregational Church East Boston, arrived in Boston after being arrested by Germans and jailed in Brussels as a spy. He was on the Baltic from England, detained two days and a night in a German field jail before intervention by ambassador Brand Whitlock led to release.
At his home in Princeton street the Boston minister, visiting Belgium, described two months of war zone scenes, his arrest and trial as a spy after a Brussels hotel encounter. He recalled nights outdoors, extensive ruin visits, and his intent to return to teaching Sunday school. Continued on Page T-Seventh Col.
Frank M. Fuller, a Boston attorney with offices at 53 State Street, was assaulted at his residence 55 Metropolitan Avenue in Roslindale in the early hours. A blood smeared Indian club lay beside him as police responded to a 1:30 am call.
Fuller recovered consciousness at Forest Hills Hospital but refused to name the assailants or his companions for the night. Neighbors told police two men were in the house earlier, and William F. Sullivan of Somerville, guardian to Fuller, was arrested on a separate note though no evidence links him to the assault.
A wartime photograph shows a single shell impact on a Rheims residential block. The bombardment that damaged the famed cathedral lasted many days with resumed shelling reported on October 13. Wealthy champagne merchants and numerous chateaus around Rheims lie in ruins as hundreds of buildings share the cathedral's fate.
Hot dog manufacturers and other sausage producers in the city face a new health measure requiring licenses from the city or town authorities where their factories operate. The Board of Health announces the licensing rule as law.

Five hundred steamfitters' helpers voted to strike Monday for a daily rate of 2.76 dollars, up from 2.50 last year. Local 63 of the United Association will meet this afternoon to plan picket duties, with the nationwide strike set to begin Monday morning citywide.
