Watterson rode in a White House car with Tumulty, the President's secretary, during the afternoon.

Mrs. Winthrop Ames died in under twenty minutes from heart hemorrhage after a brief New York visit during a pleasure trip with a friend to Philadelphia. She was about 40, wife of the theatre figure, and a prominent member of Boston clubs. Her body was taken to the North Easton estate and her death was communicated by telegraph to her husband.
Allied forces seize Armentieres while Belgian troops repulse several German assaults at the Yser crossings. A German despatch from London notes German moves near Dunkirk and Furnes as fighting continues on the Yser front. Reports also indicate continued battles in Galicia near Przemysl and Austrians failing to cross the San river amid Russian gains.
