A collision in the lower harbor between the steamer Metapan from Colon and the freighter Iowan bound for San Francisco caused the Metapan to sink shortly after being driven onto a nearby beach. All 77 passengers and the crew were rescued.
Dr. Charles W. Eliot, president emeritus of Harvard, denounced Germany in strong language and said the United States would likely stay neutral only if England and France did not need aid. He posed two questions about aiding France or England if they faced resource shortages.

Boston opera star Vanni Marcoux, among the first to join the French army, is reported killed in action after being shot in a recent engagement. His death comes amid ongoing hostilities as military forces clash overseas.

Paris dispatch reports 2000 French cuirassiers swam their horses through swollen rivers to seize Estaires, ten miles east of Hazebrouck, as French infantry took the town by nightfall. German forces retreat east of the Lys, abandoning fortified bridges after a dramatic Allied river-crossing.
Clark G Boynton a Wollaston real estate man admitted last night that he eloped with Miss Jane Foretter a faculty member at the New Fingland Conservatory of Music and were married in Brattleboro Vermont He said he denied the marriage earlier as planned by both parties and added that the intended home cards would likely be mailed They are living at 726 Commonwealth Avenue Boston and Atlantic residents are keeping quiet about the matter
The Public Service Commission approved yesterday a merger between the Boston & Albany railroad and the Chester Becket railroad. The operating agreement comes on petition by the New York Central, which operates the B and A under lease.
